Zane forced Lucinda to stay inside while her shoulder healed, he managed to find the algae. Lucinda would've done some productive things like start brewing during this time, but she couldn't stop thinking about her. She got distracted when making potions and almost made a bottle explode by mixing two of the wrong ingredients. She'd never been this distracted before, even when seeing Tavari. Lucinda couldn't stop thinking about her beautiful green dress or her brown and blonde that cascaded down her shoulders like a waterfall. The thought made Lucinda blush. One afternoon Zane and Lucinda were on top of the roof, watching tropical fish swim around them. Zane clicked his pincers nervously as if he wanted to talk.
"I don't think you should see her." Zane said bluntly, one thing Lucinda liked about Zane is that he was always to the point. Now she didn't like it that much.
"Well I'm going to, she can help me get hair or if I ask she can just give me some. Plus, I need cheese for this potion" said Lucinda, it wasn't the only reason she wanted to see her.
"Cheese, what even is-?"
"Yes, it's actually used for some powerful potions on land. And no I'm not going to explain cheese to you." Lucinda said. Zane stopped and stared into space, as if wondering about the powers of this "cheese".
"Anyway you shouldn't go, what if she comes back with the kinds of people who try and hunt mermaids? And skin them?" Zane queried.
"She won't, I don't know how I can but I can feel it, anyway the full moon is tonight and you can't stop me."
"I wasn't going to just, be careful. Ok?"
"I will." Lucinda promised.
Lucinda left that night, this time she kept an eye out for Titanus. The scariest thing she saw was a sea bunny, which stared into her soul with its beady eyes. As Lucinda got closer to shore she could see the cove.
Kim had left that night in the cover of darkness, she only knew of the cove from Garroth. Who could always find plenty of places to make-out with local women, besides Kim, he valued their friendship too much. It was maybe a 3 mile walk down the shore, far away from town. There were two entrances, one was a tunnel on land, and the other was half in and half out of the water. The moon hit the water perfectly so that no matter what time during the night it was, the water would reflect onto the walls and and make look blue. Half of it was on the beach while the other half was still in the water, rocks stuck out of the beach and from the water and made good seats. Almost like it was purposely making chairs.
Kim walked in and saw that the mermaid was already there, sitting on the sand. Her bandage was off, and her orange hair complimented her dark purple tail and bra. The mermaid looked at Kim, and seemed surprised she actually came.
"Uhh Hi." Kim said, she sat down next to her. Her green dress getting sandy, patches from where she ripped her dress.
"Hey." Lucinda said. They looked awkwardly away from each other, Kim hoped she couldn't see her blushing. "So what's your name? Mine's Lucinda" Lucinda asked after a few moments.
"Kim"
"Kim, that's a pretty name, thank you for helping me out."
"Yeah! No problem, really I-" Kim stammered, she was having a secret meltdown. She thinks my name is pretty oh my irene- she thought.
"Why?" Lucinda asked.
"Huh?"
"You could've ignored me, or taken me town and sell me like an animal, or literally anything besides help me. Why not?"
Kim looked down at her lap. "I just couldn't see you suffer. I know a lot of people are different but I'm not like a lot of people. No one deserves to suffer." She admitted. "Why did you want to meet me?" Kim said. Lucinda sighed.
"I was a human once, the story of how I became a mermaid is pretty long and not worth telling. But I need help to turn back, I need human hair."
"Hair? Why human hair? And what for?"
"You know how mermaid tears supposedly have magical properties? Same with human hair." Lucinda explained. "Also I'm a witch so I can brew a potion to help." Lucinda waited for her to leap up and yell at her for being a sinner.
"A witch? That's cool!"
"Really? I thought you would have burned me at the stake by now." Lucinda joked. Kim giggled and began to relax, she didn't realize her shoulders had been tense.
"So it'll help you turn back into a human?"
"Yep!"
Kim stared out at the water, the moon making it shine like diamonds.
"Why not just stay a mermaid? You're free to do whatever you want without being bossed around and you can make your own rules in life." she asked. Lucinda looked at her with surprise.
"I mean being a mermaid is nice and all but it wasn't my choice in the first place..." Lucinda said. For a moment Kim saw anger in her eyes, it was almost scary. But Lucinda blinked and the look of anger was gone.
"You don't have to talk about it if it hurts." Kim said. Lucinda sighed.
"It's in the past, for now let's focus on turning me human again."
An hour passed, they chatted about the best way to get hair. Then they realized it must be getting later, Kim and Lucinda decided to meet in two days in the same cave. As Lucinda swam home, she already wished it was time to see her again.
