"Move it bitch!" said a woman as she shoved past Kim in line.

"Uh I was a-actually here first" Kim stuttered, she had to get groceries for Lily. Kim was an indentured servant, at least only for another week she would be, and Lily was making her work harder than ever.

"Did I stutter?" said the woman as she held up her head and didn't move.

"O-oh, uhm ok" Kim muttered. She waited for her turn and finally managed to pay for the bread. She walked about the market and made sure she had everything, the smell of fresh bread and flowers filled the air. Everyone went about their lives and business, the town was about 30 years or so old and only had a population of 150. Everybody knew everybody and rumors got around fast, there apparently also used to be a witch living nearby but there were rumors that her own boyfriend had drowned her. Kim didn't pay attention to much. Kim couldn't wait to finally leave Lily's house, it had been 2 years and she was tired of her crap, especially when Lily's friend, Alex, would come over and just make her job a lot harder. Kim started to walk down to the docks, looking at the ocean always made her feel better, plus she had an hour to burn before she was supposed to be back at the Lily residence, the town bell struck 11. The warmth from the sand sunk into her skin and the breeze kept her from getting to hot. The air smelled of salt and the crashing waves helped her relax as she began to think about her life once she was free, no more insults, no more early mornings. She would move into her own home and live from whatever was around her. Get some farm animals and live alone without the taunts of the village people. As Kim drifted deeper into daydream she almost didn't hear the village clock strike 12. She snapped out of it and leaped up, brushing the sand out of her short brown and blonde streaked hair and her green dress. If she was late then Lily would reduce her pay, and she had to save up for the house. She dashed across the sand, and as she ran into town she got some stares when running, but she didn't care too much. Kim ran up to the big dark brown and white house and burst into the large entryway. The wood floors were so bright they shined and the big windows let in a lot of sunlight and illuminated the giant paintings of Lily on the wall. How conceited could a person be? Kim thought. She speed walked into the kitchen, then hurriedly put the groceries onto the different racks meant for different items. She didn't mind the kitchen, she would go there to escape at night. She would read next to the light of the fireplace after a hard day of work, the big and grand kitchen was the only thing she would miss. When she turned around Lily was waiting there for her to notice her.

"So, you're back."

"Y-yep!"

"Did you get everything?"

"Yep! I got the bread, tea, oranges, and the books you wanted for you and Alex."

"Did you get the seashells I asked for?"

Seashells? Kim thought sweating nervously as she pushes her glasses up When did she ask for seashells?

"You never said-"

"So you forgot? Don't you remember I have friends from the mountains coming over TONIGHT?! They've never seen the ocean or seashells, and everything has to be PERFECT. I can't believe I got such a dumbass for a servant, can't you do anything right?." Lily complained and put her hand over her eyes, as if she were stressed. Kim flinched at the comment and looked down.

"I'm sorry, I'll go get some right now" Kim said, bowing her head respectfully.

"Oops" Lily said as she knocked over a wine bottle onto the floor. "Can you clean that up?"

Kim swallowed "Sure" she said, she grabbed the mop and quickly wiped it up, Lily watched and snickered at her. She hated this place, she hated Lily, and she hated being a servant for an asshole. Kim grabbed a satchel to carry the shells and ran out, tears forming. She walked with her head down to the beach, when she heard the waves crashing she finally looked up. She sighed and began to collect shell after shell. Lily usually yelled at her but had been dangerously quiet, that probably meant she was going to explode when she got back, for something she never even asked her to do. One rainy day Kim had come home with food and desserts for Alex and Lily, they yelled and complained at her for almost a full hour when she forgot to wipe her feet and forced her to clean it with a toothbrush. Kim sat on the beach and cried, she listened to the sounds of the sea and remembered her life before Lily. She had her own house that was small but beautiful, with a garden that she could spend all day reading in, surrounded by yellow daisies and hyacinth. Kim loved reading plays by Shakesphere or about different cultures, any type of myth, her favorite stories were ones written about Joan of Arc or Queen Hatshepsut, women were more than objects or things of beauty. She had also owned a cat to keep the mice away, his name was Perceus, after the greek hero. He was a brown tabby with a white chest. But eventually she fell short on money, so she asked Lily, who she thought was an old friend, to become her indentured servant for a year or two. That was a huge mistake, she lost her house and her freedom. Perceus hung around only because Lily thought he was cute and a great "mouser" but that was the only thing she had left. Sometimes went she was really sad she cried into his fur and he purred, which helped calm her down. Kim found him as a kitten in the wild, which is why she named him so, since he survived all odds. Kim usually stayed by herself, sometimes Captain Garroth, a redeemed pirate, would visit and fluster her with funny jokes at the bar in her free time, but he went out on a voyage and hasn't been back to visit since there was an incident with him and the king. Kim stared up at the clouds and wondered if she could survive another week.
