When I get off the bus and start walking towards my house I am more than pleased to see that my dad’s car isn’t in the driveway. He must be out, which means that I can get upstairs and start on my homework without any trouble. I put the key in the door and enter the house.

There are empty bottles of beer all over the living room, and when I walk into the kitchen there is no less. He must have woke up pretty angry today. Another reason to be happy that he isn’t home right now.

Quickly I clean the dishes in the sink and run upstairs to get in a quick shower before he comes home.

A part from my music, my room is my sanctuary. If anything happened that would fog my thought about this room, I would never step into it. My walls are filled with sayings and things that I enjoy; they help me keep my mind off of things. I turn the lights on around my bed and sit down and open my notebook. I write down today’s events in it, close it and then get started on my homework.

An hour later I hear a loud crash come from downstairs and I know that my dad must be home. I take a deep breath and close my math book before slowly making my way to the stairs, trying not to upset him anymore than he already is.

I can never tell what kind of mood he is in, and when he gets like this my initial reaction is to act as calm as possible.

“Hi dad, how was work?” I ask him when I get to the bottom of the stairs.

“I didn’t go to work” He replies dryly grabbing another beer from the fridge and walking past me to the couch.

“Oh.” I all I say back. He hufs and turns on the TV to some sports channel recapping games from last night.

“What do you want for dinner tonight?”

“I don’t care! Did you ever go and get any goddamn food yesterday?” He screams at me.

“No Dad, you didn’t leave me any money” I reply gulping some air, hoping things don’t start to turn in the wrong direction.

“Pay for it your damn self, you little shit! What do we even have in the fucking fridge” His voice growing louder. I open the fridge and find some orange juice, a bag of milk, and some vegetables.

“Um, not much Dad.”

“For fucks sake Samantha, why the fuck didn’t you get food!”

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t just steal it. I think we may have some sauce and pasta in the-“

“Fuck it, whatever! I don’t care I just need some damn food! Hurry up” he says to me and I quickly check to see if we actually have those things in the cupboard. I open it and see that we do, and I silently thank God or else I don’t know what would have happened.

I make dinner super fast in the hopes that it keeps my dad happy.

“Dinner’s ready” I say to him.

“Bring it in here, I don’t feel like getting up” He screams back.

I grab the bowl of spaghetti and walk into the dimly lit living room.

“Here you go.” I say handing him the bowl and placing another beer beside him. He says nothing like normal and I quickly get out of the way from the TV so I don’t get into trouble. I wait for him to take the first bite, and when he doesn’t complain I leave the room.

I sit in the kitchen with my bowl of spaghetti and water and eat in silence. When I’m finished I put mine in the sink and go back to see if my dad is done.

“Are you finished dad?”

“My plates clean isn’t it” I nod slightly and grab the bowl. “Can you get me another beer.” He says to me.

“I think you’ve had enough” I say quietly hoping he didn’t hear me, and masking it by saying okay.

“What just came out of your mouth?” He spits looking right up at me.

“I- I said okay” I mumble to him.

“No before that, what came out of your mouth little girl”

“Nothing Dad, I swear it was nothing.” Just as I am about to walk away and hope that he didn’t actually hear what I said he stands up quickly from his chair and slaps the plate out of my hand causing it to crash onto the floor.

“What the fuck came out of your mouth” He grabs my chin and yanks in so I’m looking right at him. “Tell me.” He demands. My breathing hitches and my heart starts pounding. I should be used to this, it happens mostly every day but yet nothing can ever brace me for this.

“All I said was I think you’ve had enough” I close my eyes to try and block the tears from my eyes. I’m completely terrified for what is about to happen to me.

“I think I know damn well when I’ve had enough! I am a grown man and you’re a child” He says his grip still tight on my chin.

“I know, Im- I’m sorry” I choke out.

“I don’t care that you’re sorry, you don’t say things like that. You don’t think that you know when I should stop” He screams, beginning to push me back until I’m up against the wall. He removes his hand from my face, and grabs onto my wrist so tight that I can feel a mark appearing.

“I’m sorry Dad, it won’t happen again I swear” I say gulping, and praying that I get off without a hit.

“You better fucking believe it you little fuck!” He says his hand then connecting with my face. I stifle my pain and tears and try to be strong until I can make it up the stairs. He slaps me one more time before releasing me and throwing me out of his way.

“Now, Fuck off.” He says to me and I quickly walk up the stairs.

Another night, another time to cry myself to sleep in pain.
