Benjamin came home, shoulder hunched and face solemn. He took off his shoe, tidying it to the side and walked to the kitchen to see Ciao, in an apron, cooking.

It would usually brought a smile in his face but not today.

Ciao notices the presence behind her.
She turned, greeting and hugged the man. But Benjamin stepped back, silently rejecting her.

He greeted her with a tired tone and climbed the stairs to their bedroom.

Cio just smiled, not taking it to heart, thinking: maybe it was his work.

She let it pass, until a week later.

Benjamin told her about the letter. He was being sent back to America.

She knew this would happen, but she didn't know it was so soon. They were too different, different race, different people.

Surely, marriage like theirs won't be accepted.

She let him go with a smile, that day.

A smile that would turned to tears every night.
