Chapter 26
I felt the most comfortable I had ever felt the moment I was lucid again, my legs felt as if they were sprawled out, something firm but not constricting keeping me in place.
The low voices around me drew my attention, their soft sounds almost a whisper.
‘I can’t believe I shot my own boss; what kind of person am I’?
I knew it was Mitch who replied, there were no other scents in the vehicle.
‘You’re the only moral human I have had the displeasure of meeting; you have no idea how much damage your kind has caused’.
Hearing a scoff from the front, the voices became louder as I sensed Brad’s irritation.
‘The feeling’s mutual, you’re the first wolf I have ever had any sort of conversation with’.
Hearing a silence fall on the pair, I now registered Mitch’s arm draped over my shoulder, his hand actually holding me on his lap.
Mitch hesitated with his next question, his now unsettled demeanour bothering me.
‘How do you do it? How do you convince the ones like Sonya to fight against us’?
Brad’s discomfort with the question was thick in the air, my eyes bugging open as Mitch tried to pull me further up onto his lap.
I could tell Mitch had realised I was awake but yet he waited for his answer, Brad’s body looking stiff.
After a few minutes, Brad let out along sigh with his answer.
‘I don’t know the full process as I’ve never been that involved but I know they take the wolves young so they’re never able to learn, I guess. Most wolves are relocated to another area so they don’t pick up familiar scents’.
I was surprisingly not angry with what Brad had said but from the way Mitch’s arm was tightening around my shoulder now sliding up my neck, I could tell Brad’s answer was working him up.
‘What, so we’re just tools! What if one of your human children were taken by wolves, I know for a fact your laws would say against that’!
I wanted to tell Mitch it was okay but he had other ideas, I could tell he wanted to say more but he was holding his tongue as his gaze now diverted to the window.
Brad’s courage next surprised me more, his words no longer sounding jumbled and unsure.
‘We’re about to pull up at a country cafe, got any ideas about what to do with Sonya? I know the people here are sensitive about seeing wolves’.
I could see the small smirk appear on Mitch’s face as he went to respond.
‘Do you have any spare clothes about, I have a plan’?
Looking at Mitch like he was a freak, we soon pulled up at the cafe, making sure to park in the furthest corner from sight.
‘I have a few sets in my boot, what the hell is your plan wolf’?
Growling in retaliation, I could feel the testosterone in the car reaching an all-time high as I went to move off Mitch’s lap.
‘Don’t test me human! Sonya can shift back to human like me, how stupid can you hunters get’?
Brad’s jaw dropped at the thought, as he quickly scurried out of the car, the sound of the boot popping filling the silence.
Returning quickly, Brad had shoved a bundle of clothing through the back window before he sauntered off towards the café.
