I finished up teaching my lesson for dance class of mostly preteens or around that age group.
" Hey, Rebecca, I was wondering what the cheer team was like at your school?" One girl asked handing me a bottle of water. " It's good, why? You thinking of trying out?" I asked." Yeah, it's gonna a be my first year of high school next year. I really want to get on the team." She grinned." I could show you a few moves after the class this weekend, if you're up for it" I told her, " you're names Bella, right?" I asked taking a small sip from the water. She nodded, " That would be cool. I'll let my parents know."
As she left the receptionist lady walked in as Bella held the door open for her.” Becca, you have a call.” Ms. Peters informed me with a smile.” Who is it?” I asked.” Nancy Wheeler.” I rushed to the front desk where the only phone in the dance company was.” Hello? Nancy? What is it?” I asked.” Can you... can you help me look for Barb?” She asked through the phone.” Nancy, you don’t even have to ask. You’re at school right? I’ll be right there.”
Me and Nancy got to Steve’s place, the last place we saw her.” Barb?” Nancy called.” Barbara, you there?” I called after. Me and Nancy slowly stepped towards the woods behind Steve’s pool. Nancy took a few steps in as I followed her in.” Barb?” Nancy called. I heard rustling from beside us I snapped to where the sound was coming from.” Barb? Is that you?” Nancy called. More than rustling. Nancy's head turned to the direction of the rustling, this time it was in a different spot. Nancy gasped and started running back the Steve’s yard.
“Nancy?” I called chasing after her. Nancy ended up tripping and falling. I quickly helped her up and ran to my car and sped off.” What the hell did you you see?’ I asked nearly yelling from the fear and confusion that took over my emotions.” I don’t know, Becca, but I don’t think Barbs okay...” Nancy looked to me and started around. I shook my head. We pulled up to Nancy's house.” You’re staying over whatever that thing is... it could come for one of us if we’re alone. You’re parents are out of town aren’t they. I nodded my head.” Yes, but Nanc-“ “you’re staying over.”
We walked in to Nancy's house. Her mom was in the kitchen mixing something in a bowl.” Hey! You’re home early! How was the game?” We look to each other nervously. Mrs. Wheeler then looked up.” Oh hi, Nancy you didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend over.” ” Sorry... mom, her parents are out of town. She shouldn’t be alone if Will and Barb have gone missing, right?” Mrs. Wheeler sighed and nodded.” Nancy? What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Mrs. Wheeler asked obviously worried.“It’s Barb,” Nancy looked to me then back at her mom,” We think something bad has happened to her,” I added. Mrs. Wheeler put down what she was doing and fully turned to us a stern look on her face.” Tell me what happened.”
We told Mrs. Wheeler everything and went to Nancy's room. We didn't talk. There was nothing we could say. Later that day Mrs. Wheeler had called the Holland's over and we explained everything to them
That was the night I knew Hawkins was crazy.
The next day Mrs. Wheeler drove us to school. I didn't tell anyone about what happened not even Darla. Neither me or Nancy could bring ourselves to speak a word of it to anyone else but knew I would've had to eventually.... Since everyone at the party was questioned.
It was 1:47pm when the vice principal called me to the cafeteria where Mrs. Wheeler and Nancy were sitting across from two police officers." This argument you and Barbara had? What was it about?" One officer asked. I sat down beside Nancy." It wasn't really an argument. Barb wanted to leave. I didn't so... I told her to just go home." Nancy explained.
" Then what?" The officer asked." Then I went upstairs to put on some dry clothes," Nancy answered." And the next day, you went back and... Saw a bear, you're thinking?" The officer asked raising a brow," I don't know what it was but..." Nancy sighed," I think... I think it maybe took Barb." Nancy sighed again." And you, Rebecca, you were there too?" The other officer asked me." I was. I couldn't see it since I... I just ran, but, I heard it... It growled, not like anything I've heard." I explained." Not like anything you've heard before? Aren't you from New York?" The officer asked a hint of sarcasm in his voice." You need to check behind Steve's house-" Nancy chimmed." We did." The officer with glasses interrupted." There's nothing there. There's no sign of a bear." He added." And no sign of a car," the other officer added shaking his head." What?" Nancy gasped." A car doesn't just go missing. Maybe if someone did take her they took her car too... Burnt it?" I suggested.
" Look, we figure Barbara came back last night and then she took off, went somewhere else." The glasses officer explained." Has she ever mentioned running off? Leaving town, maybe?" The other officer asked." No," Nancy answered, " I didn't hear anything," I added shaking my head." Barb wouldn't do that, ever." Nancy told the cops." She wasn't upset about the fact that you were spending time with this boy?" The glasses officer asked," uh, Steve Harrington?" Nancy's face showed confusion," What? No!" " Maybe she was jealous because she saw you go up to Steve's room?" The other officer asked. Nancy got a bit angry." It wasn't like that!" She told them." Like what?" The officer asked." Actually, when she was going outside me and Darla asked if she was okay but she didn't say anything, not a word, she didn't even look at us." I explained." What did she go outside for?" The officer asked. I shrugged, " she wasn't talking so I didn't ask." I responded." Did you try checking on her before you left? Make sure she got in her car okay?" The glasses officer asked. Was he trying to blame me? For letting my friend go missing? I shook my head. Was it my fault?
Mrs. Wheeler took us to their house where I got in my car and went home immediately. I could tell Nancy needed some time to explain things to her mother and to cool off.
I closed the door behind me sighing. Was it my fault? I didn't even check up on her I just... left her...
I just sat at the front door just thinking till I fell asleep. I woke up at 8 that night. I went and took a shower to clear my mind... it didn't help. I called it a night. I stripped down to my underwear and went to sleep.
