Chapter 11
Ildra gazed out the window of the carriage. This time the people hadn't stopped to watch the carriage. This time they had all gotten back into their usual daily life. After all, money and bread wouldn't patiently wait for them.
Ildra shook her head. She still wished she would've been able to observe the townspeople's behavior in their daily life. Next time, she would need to go incognito. But that wasn't of importance right now. She had a matter to deal with.
"Princess, why didn't we help them?" Wendy quietly asked, while looking down at her feet. She felt like a villain for just leaving them alone like that.
"Will you now leave me now and answer to them instead? Do you believe I'm a wicked child?" Ildra bombarded Wendy.
Wendy's eyes widened. She covered her mouth with her palm. She vehemently shook her head, her straight, brown hair flying everywhere.
"No, princess! No! I would never! Even if you turn into an evil person, I will forever be loyal to you!"
Ildra smiled. Of course she believed in Wendy. She knew Wendy would never betray her.
"I know."
Actually, Ildra really wanted to help those two waiters right then and there. However, Victoria had informed her that there was no law in Lumyrna that banned abuse of workers. Ildra herself hadn't seen such a law in the documents Midas had handed to her. So, even if she had stopped the beatings, she was sure the owner, Mr. Allen, would have just continued when she wasn't there.
So...
She left them alone, and acted like her maid had not witnessed a single thing. She vowed to find a way out for them.
After all, even if she was an acting lady, she could not act rash.
"Rest assured. I will explain everything to you at a later time, Wendy. Meanwhile, we need to explore that restaurant more closely."
"How about sending a man to go undercover there, princess?" Victoria offered.
Ildra too had been thinking along the same lines, but she had come up with a slightly different idea.
"We don't need to send just anyone to go undercover. How about I go?" Ildra offered.
"Absolutely not! I'll go instead, princess!"
"Princess, Duke Castiel will never let you do that!"
"I know. I know. But even if I don't go undercover for this mission, I still need to go undercover."
Wendy and Victoria both stared at Ildra with confusion written on their faces. Though it wasn't a surprise that Victoria was more composed than Wendy.
"I need to see. I need to see with my own eyes what kind of lives people live here. It'll do no one any good if I live far away from them, and impose rules on them without understanding them, I will not make the same mistake the other nobles have," Ildra explained as she gazed fondly at the townspeople.
"That's a very noble idea to think of, princess," Victoria gently commented.
Victoria smiled. The princess and the duke were more similar than she had thought.
"Princess, do you really have to go undercover? It's not safe for you to be by yourself without any guards!" Wendy anxiously stated.
"I know, but it has to be done. I can't be protected forever," Ildra said with a resolved look on her face.
"Princess, you've grown up so much," Wendy commented while wiping her incoming tears away. She looked like a mother chick who was proud of her child.
Ildra smiled at Wendy. There was one thing she liked about Wendy very much. Even though Wendy had long gone through the vicissitudes of life, she had still maintained her innocence. She was both mature and child-like at the same time. So, out of the three in the carriage, Ildra believed Wendy was the strongest. Wendy was truly someone she looked up to. She was an enigma.
"Now, it's time to put up a strong fight in front of the duke. From what I understand, our first obstacle is Midas," Ildra grinned.

Annakin slowly set down his papers onto his desk. He leaned onto the table, listening closely to what Constantine was telling him.
'Interesting.'
"So, what you're telling me is that she wants to be an undercover agent?" he asked.
She truly was an interesting, human girl.
"Yes, my lord," Constantine confirmed. Constantine inwardly shook his head at the princess' antics. His lord may have had his own share of escapades when he was younger, but he was now old enough to know what shouldn't happen and what should. In conclusion, should anything happen to the shepherd, the sheep will go astray.
Annakin pondered the situation. There was actually not many big problems with allowing her to incognito. Of course, he wouldn't allow her to go undercover into that restaurant. That was too dangerous. But with all other missions, there was only one apparent problem: protection. He would need to find her a more suitable bodyguard as everyone would be able to recognize Victoria now.
"Constantine, I want you to immediately find the best and most honest bodyguard in Lumyrna," Annakin ordered.
