Chapter 15

As planned, before dusk they hired another carriage to take them back to the manor for some well-needed rest. Ildra was satisfied with her visit as she had gotten all the information she needed. As she stepped out of the carriage, again with Soren's help, her maids Wendy and Victoria hurried over.

Were they worried that she was going to fall, and so they waited anxiously to see their mistress safe and sound?

How cute. However, she was in no danger.

Speaking of danger, there was no doubt that that person would pose a danger to her home. She couldn't guarantee that person would not do something while she's gone. After all, she planned to stay in this Devil Continent for a long time. If something happened to her home while she was away, all her efforts would go to waste. She needed to find someone to monitor that person as soon as possible.

But who could she trust...?

Was there anyone she could trust in Illyria? Even more so, was there anyone she could trust on the Devil Continent?

Ildra couldn't just ignore that person like she'd always done since her departure from Illyria to her arrival in Lumyrna. She couldn't let that person ruin her home during her absence! It was a place filled with bad memories for her, but nonetheless, she would always consider it her home.

Perhaps, that person wouldn't make any moves yet, and stick to the plan. However, she couldn't just take chances like that. Maybe all those secrets that she had pocketed would finally become useful.

She stepped out of the carriage, and signalled to Soren- he was going to haggle with the carriage driver to keep his mistress' strolls to the town a secret, as Ildra had been too tired to take the carriage to the nearest village, and walk back to the manor. Her trips to the town would not be called incognito, if everyone knew about them.

Unlike her thoughts of Soren paying the carriage driver off, to her surprise, Soren actually made some small talk with the carriage driver, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Then, he brought up the heart of the matter.

"Mr. Carlen, I hope you agree to the offer I'm about to make to you. My lady has some use for your carriage. So, would you like to be the official carriage driver of my lady from now on? We will pay three times the amount that you usually get," Soren offered.

"Yes! I agree to being the carriage driver of her ladyship! Thank you so much! You don't know how much of a big help this will be to me. My lady, I will forever be grateful to you!" the carriage driver cried while bowing.

To be honest, he wouldn't have revealed that her ladyship made secret visits to the town even without an offer being made. However, he was grateful for the offer, and would be a fool to not accept it. Was it bad that he wanted to bring his wife and children out of poverty? Was it bad that he wanted his family to never starve again?

No.

Soren smiled at the carriage driver. He had already seen through his feelings and sensed his sincerity. He strongly believed his mistress had let this driver to take her all the way back to the manor because she could sense his sincerity, although it probably wasn't her intention to put this much trust into the driver.

But he was sure that the princess would soften her heart and accept his decision.

Yes, she would.

After all, the princess had always possessed a soft heart.

Ever since she had been thrown out of Annakin's mansion, Freya made sure not to show her lingering feelings for him in front of her father. If he knew, her dear father would definitely lose his temper, and try to find a way to hurt her beloved. And her father would fail.

"I'm no evil man. Although you agreed to marry me, are you sure you want go through with this, Freya? I know you still love, that bastard, Annakin. So, I'm giving you the chance to back out," Keefe Fenmore, her other childhood friend and now her fiancee, solemnly declared.

His voice pulled her out of her thoughts.

"Yes. I'm sure I want to go through with this. Besides, if Annakin really loved me, he wouldn't have made me wait this long," Freya reasoned.

"It's good that you've accepted this engagement, Freya!" her father's voice boomed, interrupting the pair's conversation. Her father walked out from Duke Fenmore's study with a huge smile on his face. Duke Fenmore was following not far behind.

"Freya, I'm glad to finally call you my daughter," the duke smiled.

"The wedding date has been fixed for 8 months from now: October 7, 2020," he announced.

To Freya, the formalities happened in the blink of an eye. Within an hour, the Devil Matchman arrived to sanction the marriage. Under his supervision, the two jewels that the two families had arranged were exchanged, legally making Keefe her betrothed. In addition, the marriage contract was signed by both Keefe and her to formally register the engagement.

Then, it was over. The only part remaining was the engagement ball. Although she had been a bit nervous throughout the engagement, she wouldn't be so nervous at the ball. As the leading lady and belle of society, Freya had attended so many high-ranking balls and parties. She was no longer deterred by strict etiquette at those places. She was a first-rate lady of the Devil Continent. Balls and parties were her turf.

"I hope you won't regret this," Keefe said with a frown on his face.

Freya only returned a sad smile, and left to get ready for the ball.

"Do you know a devil that goes by the name Lucille?" Ildra asked Soren and Victoria as they strode back to the manor.

"There are many Lucilles out there. Do you know any characteristics of this Lucille that distinguishes him? Do you know anything about his background that may narrow down the long list?" Soren asked.

Ildra thought back to Lucille's few visits.

"He is quite ordinary looking for a devil. He has ashy brown hair and gray eyes. He does wear spectacles. Ah, he also told me he lives in the capital."

Soren smiled.

"By Lucille, do you mean Lucille the author of the most popular gossip newspaper in the capital, which goes by the name: Devilicious News?" he revealed.
