They were all still. They were all silent. They were all looking between Virgil and the door. Did any of them believe what had just happened? No. Did they all sense the sadness in Virgil that Roman missed? Yes. Virgil new they could tell and he hated it.
"Virgil, are you-" Emile started but was cut off by the noise of a car driving over the gravel on the drive. They immediately went into the living room and tried to act natural, since they all knew it was Patton.
"Hey, Virge. Who's car is on the drive?" Patton called out. They heard the door shut and then Patton walked 'round the corner into the living room, "Remy!"
"Heya, girl," Remy smiled picking Patton up in hug when he ran over.
Patton hugged Remy tighter, "Where have you been the last fourteen years?"
The other chuckled, "You're just like your father. I've been in America, better Starbucks."
"Fair enough," Patton smiled and Remy put him down before turning around to face Virgil and Damien.
"See, Patton's cultured and understands happiness," Remy says raising his eyebrows and adjusting his son glasses.
"Happiness?" Virgil frowned, "What's that?"
"No!" Patton through himself at Virgil, hugging him tightly, "I'm going to physically fight you!"
Virgil smiled although he was rather surprised that his son had just attacked him with a hug, "Never mind, I just found it."
Patton smiled widely at Virgil and then noticed Emile. He stood up and smiled at the other, "Hi! I'm Patton."
"I'm Emile. Remy's fiancé," He smiled warmly. Patton squealed and looked at Remy.
"You're getting married? Congratulations!" Patton grinned hugging Remy again and then Emile, "Give us details. Where did you propose? Who proposed? Did you cry?"
"I proposed, Emile cried and I did not," Remy said looking away and coughing slightly.
"Emile, you proposed and Remy cried like a baby, right?" Deceit smirked raising an eyebrow.
"No!" Remy basically shouted rather defensively and then looked away, "But yeah."
"Let's see the ring!" Patton said and then, whilst he talked about the wedding with Damien and Remy, Virgil stood up and went outside followed by Emile. They leapt and landed, silently, on the roof of the house.
Virgil stood with his back to the other. He knew what Emile was going to say, he knew what conversation was about to follow. Especially since Emile was a therapist.
"Why don't you tell Roman you love him?" He asked sitting down with his legs out but still looking at Virgil, "You like him and he quite obviously likes you, its not like you'd be setting yourself up for heartbreak or rejection."
"It's not quite that simple..." Virgil sighed looking back at Emile and then sitting next to him.
"Why not?" The younger asked looking out on the landscape.
"Well, I told him that we wouldn't see each other again. I told him to get out of my house and I threatened to kill him. If that doesn't make someone hate you then fuck knows what will."
"Ah, well you see, love is an interesting thing. Love stops you from hating someone even though they've done bad things. It's why love is so powerful. Dangerous, even. And I'm sure Roman would understand why you had to do it."
"But he also knows I'm a vampire, and who the hell would want to date a vampire?"
"He learnt you were a vampire and still came back to see you and asked if you would see each other again. He doesn't care."
Virgil sighed lying back so that he was looking at the sky, he could smell a walker passing through, his boots clicking on the floor.
"I don't understand humans," Virgil mumbled.
"I don't even think humans understand humans." Emile agreed, "Go and talk to him."
"I don't know where he lives though." The taller replied.
"Follow your nose. One foot in front of the other and everything else follows," Emile smiled warmly. Virgil looked at the other, a slight frown present on his face.
"You know what? It doesn't matter. I'll leave it." Virgil stood up, "Do you and Remy have somewhere to stay tonight or do you want to stay with us?"
"I booked a hotel, but thank you."
Virgil nodded and then jumped off the roof landing noiselessly one the floor. Emile watched him go. He could see that it pained Virgil to deny whatever it was he felt for Roman, but he could also see that he wouldn't be able to change the others mind.
~~
Later that night, when everyone had gone and Patton was in bed, Virgil was tossing and turning. He couldn't get the thought of Roman out of his head. He couldn't stop thinking about what he said. Had he been too harsh? The events replayed over, and over in his head, until he couldn't bare it anymore.
After getting changed, Virgil quietly crept downstairs, tied his combat boot laces, grabbed his keys and left. He ran down the road at lightening speed, praying that Roman would still accept him.
Roman's scent was hard to find especially since it had been over 12 hours since then. Eventually Virgil found himself walking up w mountain. There didn't seem to be any civilisation or houses so why Roman's trail was leading up here Virgil hadn't a clue.
But the scent of strawberry shampoo was getting stronger and the night was becoming darker. Virgil grew slowly more suspicious as he kept walking up the mountain. The darkness was only broken by what little light shone off the moon and the silence could have been cut with an axe it was so thick. But the dark didn't affect Virgil's vision; Actually it made it better if anything.
As he neared the top, he could smell something else. Something other than strawberries but still undeniably Roman. Something both humans and vampires depend on. Something that made Virgil's mouth water and his heart pound at the mere smell of it.
Blood.
