Because Richie committed suicide , he had to become a ' civil servant ' in the Netherworld and work there . By refusing , he became a demon , a form of bio - exorcist . He enjoys his new demon afterlife , scaring and killing people . He's young and mischievous , constantly getting into trouble . But he's lonely and just wants to be seen by the living . This can only be done if a living person says his middle name three times in a row . And Beetlejuice will no longer be invisible .
