Still lost in my own world, I barely noticed someone poking me in the ribs. At first it was light, barely noticeable pokes, then it was one really sharp jab that made me yelp. I tore my eyes away from Jasper (Oh dear God that name! Like smooth chocolate melting in my mouth just thinking it!) and glared at Colton, who had his finger raised to poke me again, an innocent smile on his face.
“That hurt you jerk!” I rubbed my sore ribs, giving him a death glare. I had half a mind to whack him upside the head, but he’d probably just poke me again. And that really hurts, especially when he aims for my ribs.
“I had to bring you back down to earth somehow. You looked pretty dazed there, gawking at Cullen like he was a steak and you were a starving lion. I mean, I’m pretty sure you were drooling.” My cheeks burned and this time I did whack him upside the head, ducking my head down to hide my face behind my hair.
‘I was actually doing that! That’s so embarrassing!’
Luckily everyone at the table was focused on Bella, who was asking about another new comer in the cafeteria. I barely glanced up at him as he entered, and like the rest of his family he walked with unearthly grace and had the face of a god. But compared to Jasper, he seemed boring.
He was tall, with wavy dark auburn hair, his skin as pale and smooth as white marble. He had this whole dark and broody thing going on for him, ignoring everyone who stared at him with mixed looks of hate, envy, and a couple looks of lust. Silly hormonal teenagers! And like the rest of his family, he had the same golden eyes, enchanting and daunting at the same time. But his eyes seemed darker than the others, more black than gold.
Before coming here, I probably would have found him slightly attractive, but he just didn’t intrigue me. I barely paid him any mind as my mind began to think of Jasper again.
“AW! Don’t be like that! It’s cute, you’re interested in a guy!”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!”
“Well I’ve never seen you this stars struck before. It makes me feel so neglected, seeing you look at someone like that.”
He is really pushing it. He still had his arm around my shoulders and he pulled me closer to him. I don’t think he was doing it to be a tease, but just to get Jessica and Lauren to quit trying to flirt with him. While we had been talking before the Cullen’s came in, they had been making flirty comments at him, and sort of degrading me. It wasn’t flat out rude, but everything they asked me had this underlying condescending tone to it. Like when they asked me, “Why are you so pale? Aren’t you from Arizona?” They might as well have called me pasty. Or when they said, “Aren’t you going to eat lunch? You look like you could use the food.” They might as well have called me anorexic, even though I’m not. And I’m not exactly a stick either. Unlike Bella, who was thin and wiry, I had some meat on my bones. And it didn’t really bother me either, even though some girls used to call me fat and stuff at my old school. But it never bothered me, I thought my figure was attractive.
Even though I knew Colton was only trying to ward Lauren and Jessica off by pulling me closer to him and trying to act like we were a couple, it bothered me to have his arm around me. It had never bothered me before whenever he’d draped his arm around me, I knew he wasn’t trying to flirt. He was just being my best friend. It didn’t feel right anymore, like someone else’s arm was supposed to be there. I didn’t like him holding me this close, I wanted someone else to do it. But who?
