FROM: Sam

'Yeah, I'm still up. Sorry for the late reply, I was busy unpacking boxes with my dad.

So, what's up?'

She replied...

She actually replied.

Maybe she is different. Different from all the others, from them. Just maybe... maybe I have a chance of having a real friend.

TO: Sam

FROM: Cole

'The ceiling.'

Then I reread my two word reply over and over again. And I just hesitantly hit sent after reading it almost ten times.

After I hit sent I instantly got a reply.

FROM: Sam

'Really?!

C'mon, what is the real reason you messaged my number?'

I waited exactly three minutes before I replied, it took me that long before I had the right words to reply her with. This was the first time in almost four years someone has replied to me, without a single word of insult.

TO: Sam

FROM: Cole

'Nothing.'

I hit sent then I quickly turned my phone off.

Then I put it back on my bedside table.

I put my hands on the back my head and closed my eyes. But for some reason I can't sleep. I kept thinking about her. I don't know why but I can't help the feeling that she just wants to help me and to prove everyone wrong.

I sighed and opened my eyes as I began to stare again at the four corners in my room.

Then something caught my eye. There was a light shinning from my window. At first I thought it was just the head lights of the neighbor's car, but after a while the light seemed to grow brighter and brighter. So I got out of my bed and walked slowly towards the window.
As I was only a step away from the window, there was a tap on my window.

*Tap* *Tap* *Tap*

Then I opened the curtain to...

"Hey, I got your message. Then when I was about to reply, my phone suddenly died and I then just realized that we are actually neighbors. Funny thing, I didn't recognize where I was going when I followed you."

She said with a smile, while I just stared at her like she grew another head.

"What? Why are you looking at me like that?"

She asked as if I was the crazy one.

"You are the one outside my window, standing on a ladder, a few feet high from the ground, in the middle of the night. Why wouldn't I be looking at you this way?"

I said as raised my eyebrows at her.

"Oh, right sorry."

She said as she looked away from my eyes and she started to twiddle with her thumbs.

"Ohm..." She said as she played with her fingers.

"Sam, right?" I asked uncomfortably while she continued to twiddle her fingers and silently nodded her head.

I stared at her, observing her. She was wearing a white jacket and denim jeans. Her hair was in a low pony tail with a few strands out of place.

A chilly breeze suddenly blew and she instantly wrapped her hands around herself. While I was frozen in place, I felt numb and stared at her. As her hair blew with the wind, all I could think about was how much I missed my sister. Sam reminded me of her, a lot, from how she talked to me earlier today, and how much she looked like my sister right now.

I didn't realize that I was shamelessly staring at her until she flicked my forehead. And that, reminded me of my mother.

"Hey, staring is bad." She said as she bore her eyes into mine.

Mom used to say that to me a lot of times.

"So-sorry." I stuttered out as I took a step back and scratched the back of my head.

She reminded me a lot of my family.

"So... what now?" She said as she hugged her arms closer to herself.

"I think I should let you in before you freeze to death." I said to her as I looked at anything except her. But to my dismay, my eyes wondered to her pale face.

I kept staring at her and I suddenly remembered my sister, Haley.

~FLASHBACK

We were waiting for our mom and dad when Haley suddenly started laughing beside me.

I looked at her like she was crazy because one minute ago we were looking at our parents from the window and now she's laughing like a hyena.

"Why are you laughing?" I asked with my eyebrows raised when her laughter started to die down.

She completely stopped laughing and stared at me with her light brown eyes wide open. Then after five seconds she laughed even louder.

"Ohm... Cole? What is your sister laughing at?" My mom asked as she sat in the passenger's seat and my dad turned to face me and a laughing Haley with the same facial expression as my mom.

"I have no idea." I said flatly as I turned to face her again.

Then the three of us said at the same time, "What's so funny Haley?"

And with one last chuckle and a few deep breaths, she finally stopped laughing, completely.

"Okay?" My dad said as he put the key in the ignition and the car came alive. As dad drove out of the drive way I turned to look at my no longer laughing sister.

"So..." I asked her as I tilted my head to the right.

Haley looked straight ahead with a big smile on her face.

"Mommy!" She said in her high voice.

"Yes, Haley?" mom said as she looked at us from the rear view mirror.

"Mom, Cole's shoes don't match!" Then she started laughing again but she wasn't alone. Both mom and dad laughed along with her, while I turned into a tomato.

~END OF FLASHBACK

*Snap!* *Snap!*

I lightly shook my head.

Then I saw my sister's eyes staring at me.

"Cole? You okay?" She said as she snapped her fingers in front of my face, again.

"Yeah, fine. But..." I said as I took another step towards her. "Never mind." I sighed out and hung my head low and took another step away from her.

I didn't realize that she was already in my room. She might have came when I spaced out.

"What? What were you about to say?" She asked curiosly as she scanned my room. I was glad that I cleaned it before I left for school this morning.

"Nothing. It doesn't matter." I said as I shook my head.

A light breeze blew from the window. I noticed that Sam was still feeling cold.

"C'mon, you are freezing your ass off." I said as I turned around to my closet to get something for her to wear and she followed me across the room. All I found that could fit her was my old school varsity jacket.

"Here, put this on." I said as I handed her the jacket.

"Thanks." She said as she took the jacket off my hand and I helped her put it on.

I just nodded in response and the silance dawned on us.

"I think I should probably go home. My dad might be freaking out right now." She said with a chuckle at the end.

"Yeah, I'll walk you."
