I ran into the alley trying find a place to hide, they were after me l couldn't let them catch me, not now not ever. I tried calming down my heavy breathing but l had ran so much it was physically impossible to not make a sound. l was so tired, so hungry my head spinning, maybe l should just go back with them, it would mean a bed to sleep in some food and a shower

No! Never
I'm not going back to that god forsaking place! Mother Teresa would surely punish me for leaving in the first place

I hid in a small corner behind a dumpster, a grown adult wouldn't be able to fit here but l did my body wasn't that big, people would always mistake me for a 14 year old all the time

"Come out you bitch"

I tucked myself in more

"You stole from us and for that you'll pay"

I didn't mean to steal I was so hungry
The small piece of bread did nothing to satisfy my hungry

"I need payment for what you took" he laughed and l could just imagine what he wanted to do to me

"George, l heard something over there let's go" a voice said in a distant

I blew out a breath I didn't know I was holding

My feet too tired to move l decided to spend the night there
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Honey wake up"
Mom?
"Nova" my mom shook me awake
I got up sleepily rubbing my eyes l was back in my old room
"Mom?" I hugged her
"Shhh its okay baby"
"Mom l miss you, l miss you so much"
"I know honey l know, l miss you too"
"Where's dad?"
"Pumpkin I'm right behind you" my dad said
My head spun
"Dad" l ran to hug him tears slipping from my eyes
"Why did you leave me"
"We never left you honey, we were right here all along"
"B-but l-l don't understand"
"Its okay baby girl, wipe you're tears"
"Dad please don't leave me"
"We never left honey" my mom came behind me
"We're always right here" she touched my heart
"We love you honey" they backed away
"Where are you going, wait mom, dad take me with you"
My eyes opened l was still behind the dumpster
My knees were so weak for staying bent up like that. l begrudgingly made my way back into town
I needed some food or I'd surely die of hunger l spotted a stall with a woman selling fruits and other things
"Excuse me miss, may l have something to eat please"
She eyed me up and down with disgust in her eyes l almost thought she wouldn't give me anything my skin color obviously playing a huge factor in her decision making
"Ugh fine" she handed me an apple and a small piece of bread with some water
The bread looked like she was about to throw it out l thanked her and made my way to a corner where I'd be out of sight
I started on my food hungrily I finished it within a few seconds my stomach feeling better than it did before
I looked down at my dirty clothes that hasn't been changed since l left the orphane a week ago
I smelled of sweat and my hands and feet dirty
This must be how I'll be from now on
I got up walking back into the road, l needed to find somewhere l could hide so the guards from the orphanage wouldn't find me, l don't wanna go back there they treated me like the dirt beneath their feet, abused me because of the color of my skin
I was just about to reach the path that leads out of town when l heard someone shout
"You there, hold it"
I looked back a guard from the orphanage
oh no they found me
I ran, my eyes snapped behind to see if he was getting closer l bumped into someone he held tightly unto my arms my eyes followed the hands straight up to its owner
"Let me go" l screamed
"Now now, nova we're just trying to get you home tchk tchk" the guy who held me spoke
Another guard had caught me
"I have no home!"
"You ungrateful little-"
"Jerry, let's get nova here back to the orphanage" the other guard finally caught up to us
The brought me right up to the gates of the orphanage where mother Teresa was waiting
I stood before her with my head down
"What were you thinking nova"
She walked slowly towards me
"You're gonna wish you never disobey me" she threw some paper at me
I took it up
"Your chores, do all of them before u sleep and take a shower you stink"
"Yes mother Teresa"
"What are you waiting for, go!"
I rushed Inside to the dining area where some smaller children sat around looking up at me
I finally had some time to looked at what was written on the pages.
How will l get these finished before tomorrow
1. Scrub the floors spotless
2. Clean all the bathrooms including the guards quarters
3. Do the dishes
4. Iron the smaller kids uniforms
5.clean the the nuns rooms
6.feed the chickens
7. Water the garden plants
8. Clean the attic
And the list goes on, it was already evening surely I'd need more time to do all of this
I didn't delay much longer starting with the uniforms first. There was many small children in the orphanange it would take me hours to complete this
It was 4 am when l finally completed everything. Mother Teresa or the other nuns normally woke the bigger kids at six and the smaller ones at seven
I quickly took a shower and headed to the bigger kids quarters, there were 18 beds in total which means 18 of us stayed here
I got into bed reminding myself I'd have to get back up in two hours
