My friend and I tidied things up and started for my son's house farther down the hill. He lived about a mile and a half from me. When we got there I asked my friend to come in with me and she declined saying it was a family thing and she would wait for me in the car.
The kids were all happy to see me. Whenever I would visit, they would run to me just to see who would be the first to touch me! I loved that. It made me feel so special.
I got the presents into the house and handed them out. My son wasn't there but my daughter-in-law assured me that he was on his way.
Well, we didn't want to wait for him so the girls opened their gifts. They all liked them. All of a sudden, the door flew open and in walked my son, my heart. When he sat down at the table, I thought he must be very upset with someone.
My grandson opened his gift and then I said I had to hurry and go turn in the car rental. As I got ready to go, my son gave me a look that could kill and followed me out to the stairs. I told him goodbye and as I started for the stairs he yelled "What's up mom. Why are you leaving so soon?" I replied"You know I have to take the car back."
"Really, mom. Really? You come to my house high and don't think I will notice?"
" I am not high Son. What is your problem?"
" I just wonder why you're not sticking around. What about your crackhead friend in the car?"
"Oh son, you are so far from the truth about her. She looks a little rough around the edges but she has been taking care of her boyfriend for the past 18 years. He doesn't have long to live. But a crackhead? No!"
"Ok mom, just go ahead and
walk away...like you always do."
"Goodbye son."
"Mom! Come back here."
"Goodbye son."
"MOM! Why can't you stay and talk?"
"Son, I have to take the car back and stop yelling for all the neighbors to hear. And please don't let the kids come out and hear you!"
"What's the matter? Are you ashamed?"
