Every success story has a struggling path. The path where you don't know if you are going to make it to the other side. I never knew my life was going to go like this. I never knew I would end up in this town with this kind of career with an amplitude of dark secrets hidden within me. All I know now is that I made it. This is my success story.
I guess I should start from the beginning. The moment where my life changed forever. A moment where I lost everything.
Nine years ago
I was 13 years old. My mother and I were preparing for our movie night that we always have every Friday night. My father never attended the movies night due to the double shifts. I only saw him in the mornings on Fridays and then Saturday mornings. He was a hardworking man when he was with my mother. My mother pushed the shopping cart around as I walked behind her still in my school uniform. I never wanted to get out of wearing purple and khaki so bad in my life. I hate our outfit. We walked into the snack aisle.
"How about popcorn?" she asked me.
"With extra butter?" I asked her.
"That's the only way to eat it," she said to me with a smile as she grabbed the butter popcorn that had extra butter in it. I grabbed the can of butter that we normally use.
"Red licorice candy?" I asked her with a smile as I held it up.
"Sure," she said to me rolling her eyes. I threw the candy in the cart. "But you are brushing your teeth once you are finished chewing it. Don't need to pay for any more cavities."
"Deal," I said to her.
"Nacho cheese or cheese puffs?" she asked me while holding both bags up. I put my finger under my chin as this was a critical decision to make.
"Cheese puffs," I said to her. She threw the cheese puffs into the cart and put the other chips back. We both smiled at each other.
"I can't wait for our girl's night," she said to me.
"Me too," I said to her as I grabbed a hold of the cart with my left hand. I walked on the side of the cart as we continued to walk towards the electronics department.
"Now, we are going to watch as many movies as we can, so we have to pick good ones," my mother said to me.
"How about this princess movie?" I asked her while holding up the movie.
"Okay, and then we can watch this documentary about wild killer whale," my mother said to me. I just stared at her with a serious face. "Too parenting?"
"Yes. Why don't I stick with the movie choices?" I said to her.
"Sounds fair," she said to me shrugging her shoulders. I continued walking throughout the aisle picking up movies and sitting them back down.
"What about this one?" I asked her while showing her a movie about high school drama.
"I guess we can watch that one too," she said to me. I threw it in the cart.
We walked towards the self-checkout area. I stood in front of the scanner as my mother handed me our items. I scanned them on the scanner and placed them in the bag afterwards.
We walked out of the store and to the car. I helped her load the bags in the car. I sat in the back seat of the car because even though I was 13 years old. She doesn't want me in the passenger seat until I am 15 years old. Bummer. My father allowed me to sit in the front seat whenever he drove me to school.
She parked the car in the driveway. I helped with the bags and sat them down on the floor of the kitchen. "Go do your homework," she said to me. I sat in the dining room and placed my book bag on the table. I walked into the kitchen as she placed everything on the kitchen counter. "After your homework, we will start our girl's night."
