I wake up to what feels like the next day. The sun peeks in through small cracks of the cardboard. My left leg is chained. I am too tired to try and escape. I look up at the ceiling thinking about what my life is going to become. It is only a matter of time before they sell me to someone. I look over to my side to find someone lying next to me shirtless. It's Andre. He must have spent the night in here with me which could only mean I might have passed out. It explains why my legs are in so much pain right now. My stomach hurts so bad. I silently let out the tears trying not to wake him. I wish I had the ability to do something about this. Unfortunately, I don't. I hear footsteps coming towards the door. I quickly turn on my side away from Andre and close my eyes.
The door opens and the bright lights turn on. I can hear the footsteps coming closer to me. I feel a light tap on my shoulder. I open my eyes to find Mark standing over me. He crouches down to the side of the mattress. "Take this and drink this," he says to me handing me a pill and a glass of water. I sit up in the bed without making too much movement to wake Andre. I grab the pill out of his hand.
"What is this?" I ask him.
"To help you," he says to me. I look up at him. He nods his head for me to take it.
I toss the pill in my mouth drinking the water behind it. I try to say something to Mark but he covers my mouth with his hand. He silently tells me not to say a word. I nod my head in agreeance. He takes the cup out of my hand. He walks back out of the room and turns off the lights leaving me by myself again. I squeeze my legs to my chest as I wrap my arms around them. I bury my head and hope that this nightmare will soon be over. I can hear more footsteps coming towards the door. The door opens and the lights cut back on again. I lift my head to find Bruce standing at the door with Mark behind him.
"Aye Andre! Get up!" Bruce yells. Andre begins to move. He lifts his head off the mattress and looks at me. He smiles sitting his body up with his back against me.
"What you want?" he asks Bruce.
"We need to make a store run," he says to him.
"For what?" Andre says.
"Breakfast. What you think?" Bruce says to him.
"Go on without me," he says to them.
"You're the one with the keys," Bruce says to him.
"Who going to stay here and make sure she doesn't escape?" Andre asks.
"I will," Mark says to him. Andre pauses.
"Fine. Let's go," Andre says as he grabs his clothes and walks out of the room. The rest follow as Mark close the door behind them. They left the light on. I continue to bury my head into my legs. I want to go home. I want to go back to my murderous father and my bed.
Minutes goes by as I hear footsteps coming to the door. I lift myself up as I sat on the mattress with my back against the headboard. I waited wondering who will be behind that closed door. I was hoping it was Mark. The doorknob turns and my heart begin to race. The door opens and its Mark. I let out a sigh in relief. He softly closes the door behind him with a paper bag in his hand.
"I brought you some food," he tells me.
"I am just glad that it's you and not Andre or Bruce," I say to him.
"I am sorry about what Andre made me do," he says to me with his head down.
"It's fine," I say to him. "It's not your fault." There's a pause. "What you got there?"
"It's a burger," he says to me. "Do you like burgers?" He looks up at me with a smile on his face.
"Now I do," I say to him sending a smile back to make him feel comfortable. He hands me the bag. I grab it from him. "Thanks."
I begin to eat as he sat at the foot of the bed. I shove the burger so fast in my mouth, I think I look like a football jockey. I look up at him as he looks at me with a surprised look.
"Why are they keeping me here?" I ask him.
"I don't know. I'm guessing for fun," he says to me.
"Why won't they let me leave? I won't tell anyone," I say to him.
"I don't think that's an option anymore. You can identify us to the cops," he says to me.
"Will they kill me?" I ask with a tear coming down my face.
"I won't let that happen," he says to me.
"I don't think I can believe that," I say to him. He glances over at the door. He puts his hand in his pocket causing me to slowly back away from him. He takes out a ring of keys and fiddles for a key. "What are you doing?"
"I am going to get you out of here," he says to me.
"Seriously?" I ask him starting to feel excited.
"You have been through too much already. You don't deserve to be more hurt than you already have," he says to me. "Now, hold still." He holds my ankle in his hands as he inserts the key in the socket. He turns the key and the handcuffs comes undone around my ankle. I place my unchained feet on the floor feeling like a free woman. I stand up and look at him with tears forming in my eyes.
"Thank you," I say to him as I hug him. He embraces the hug. I knew that I could possibly trust him.
