Jason was getting on Evelyn's nerves. By the end of chemistry he had already become good friends with Steven and a few of the other kids in the class. He had cracked more jokes than Evelyn had all semester and the teacher was calling him a 'big ball of energy.'
That's supposed to be my nickname. Evelyn thought as she stormed her way to the choir room. Evelyn usually stopped in the choir room on her way to drama class to chat with Sarah who had choir second period. As she neared the choir rooms, she heard the loud chatter of the kids already socializing before class. Evelyn tried not to appear annoyed when she heard Jason's name echo out from some of the choir room gossip. I am not going to let a stupid boy ruin my day. She told herself as she scanned the room for Sarah.
The choir room was a large area with layered seats along the left wall. In the center of the room sat a baby grand piano that anyone could play before class or after class if they wanted. Along with the piano, there were also two guitars that people rarely played as piano seemed to be the more popular instrument of choice. Unable to find Sarah in the choir bleachers, Evelyn took a seat at the piano as she often did, and began playing.
"You know Falling Slowly?" Someone asked. Evelyn looked up so see who the voice belonged to and she was not pleased. "What does it matter Jason?" She asked kindly. She was a bit jealous of him sure, but she knew better than to let it show.
"It's just... Well, I know that song on guitar" he said, patting the guitar he had strapped around his neck. Why? Evelyn asked herself. Out of all the songs I know how to play I just HAD to play the one Jason knows.
"Do you know the words too?" Jason pressed.
Of course she did.
"Kinda." Evelyn said lazily, silently pleading for him to leave. Under normal circumstances, she would have loved to sing with someone. There were few people who had the same music taste as her and even less who would sing out loud in a public place. But something about Jason just grinded her the wrong way. Evelyn thought she might know why, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to admit to herself quite yet.
Jason pulled out a blue marbled pick from his back pocket and stuck it in his mouth. "Can you sing harmony?" He asked through his teeth and began twisting the machine heads on the schools guitar. Somehow, the fact that Jason could tune a guitar without a tuner ticked her off even more. "I heard you singing in chemistry, you were pretty good."
Evelyn flushed despite herself. "I can sing harmony but I don't really want sing with you. Sorry Jason."
"aw come on. What was your name again? Evelyn? Come on Ev!" Evelyn stiffened at his use of Allan's nickname for her.
Oh, he did NOT just call me that.
"Please, please, please, please, please....." Jason continued. And continued. And continued.
Evelyn pushed her fingers into her temples. "If I say yes will you stop saying 'please?!'" Wow since when did I start sounding like Ally? Evelyn was always the one to be told to calm down, not the other way around.
"Probably yes!" Jason squealed, determined.
Evelyn let out a slow grown and played the opening chords to the song. She was almost thrown off when Jason joined in on the guitar, she wasn't used to playing along with other instruments.
When Jason began singing, Evelyn was convinced someone else had joined in. His voice sounded nothing like him. A sweet, deep ringing echoed out in the choir room as Jason moved over each note like he was riding a smooth wave to shore. Evelyn looked up from the ivory at Jason, who gave her a nod. She forgot she was supposed to be singing too.
