Prologue
A little boy played under a tree, his mother looking on from a bench nearby. She looked down to read her book while her four year old son made a vroom!ing noise and drove his toy truck up the tree trunk. A typical day, Daddy was at work, Sarah was gone to preschool, and Mommy and Will stayed at home.
An old lady in a black dress suddenly appeared, startling the boy from his play. But he wasn't scared, though he had good reason to be.
"You are William," the lady said, and it wasn't a question. The little boy nodded uncertainly.
"Yeah," he replied, and stopped playing with the truck. The old lady smiled slowly, a devious smile.
"The one I was looking for," she muttered under her breath. She spoke louder. "On your seventeenth birthday, true love will find you," she said seriously. "You'll know it's her because it will be her birthday as will."
Will nodded, not knowing what to think.
"But first you'll have to face three tasks. First, something or someone close to her will be put in danger." Will held up one chubby finger. "Then, She herself will be put in danger. It is your job to save them," she continued. A second finger.
He looked at his hand. "Dats only two. You said tree."
"And finally, you will put in danger." She watched as the young boy's face crumpled, utterly lost.
"You're too young to understand what I'm saying now. But someday you will, someday you will. However, until that day you will remember none of this conversation."
She disappeared as quickly as she had come.
The boy's eyes went blank, he shook his head, and resumed playing.
His mother, still sitting on the bench, hadn't noticed a thing.
