"Luke!" I called for the hundredth time. No answer.
I sighed in frustration and decided to go look for him.
I dried my hands off with the towel that was next to the sink. I slung the towel over my shoulder and crossed my arms.
My feet started to drag myself out of the kitchen and into the hallway. I opened and closed several doors. Unfortunately, it took me until the last door to reach Luke.
I swung the door open swiftly and found Luke playing on the floor with our six month old child, Matthew. Matt wasn't even able to crawl on his own, he didn't even have his own leg.
I cringed at the memory. "Hi love" Luke looked up at me and smiled. I smiled back.
"I've been calling you" I stammered but never let my smile disappear.
"Sorry honey. Didn't hear you" he turned away from me and started to play with Matt again.
I walked over to them, kneeled down and rubbed the top of Matt's head.
"You okay?" Luke asked. there was a pause.
"Never better" I sighed and got back up.
"Need any help?" He asked. "No thanks. I just need to fill up the dishwasher then we can be on our way to my parents house" I announced.
"Okay" he sighed.
I walked over to the doorway and leaned my shoulder gently against it.
"It hasn't been the same since Kevin passed away" I sniffled. My eyes started to water at the memory of Kevin's horrible death.
"Yeah. But it'll be good for your parents. To see you again" he smiled. "And Matthew" he continued.
"Yeah" I mumbled.
I walked back over to them, giving a kiss on Luke's forehead and doing the same to Matt.
Then I walked back off to finish what I was doing.
As I was loading my dishwasher, the house phone started to ring.
As usual, I dried my hands with the towel and slung it over my shoulder. I walked over to the phone which was lying on the couch and I answered it.
"Hello?" I said first into the phone.
"Is this Emma Diamond?" A weak, but deep voice asked. I felt shivers run up my spine.
"No. It's Emma Hemmings now. Who is this?" I asked. My voice became so hoarse that I had to clear it multiple times.
"Emma?" The voice called out. It was much clearer now and I could tell it was an Australian accent, a male.
"Who is this?" I repeated.
Then the line went dead. A clicking sound indicated that the caller hung up.
"Who was that?" A familiar voice asked.
I turned around and saw Luke walking towards me, holding Matt.
"I don't even know" I chuckled. "I'll hold him" I offered.
He nodded his head and handed him to me.
"Ready to go?" He asked me. I nodded my head while staring at Matt.
"I'll go put his things in the car" I announced. He nodded and took Matt.
I grabbed his things and went outside, into the hallway.
It wasn't such a long walk down to the lobby because there was an elevator.
