Today I am feeling alive, awake, and free. Now that I have the weight and guilt of Matt off my shoulders and finally understand him, I am ready to live and experience things I’d hadn’t be able to experience in the past.
One of those things just happens to be flirting. It’s been so long I am afraid I may have forgotten how. Much to Krista’s urging, I am going to give Brent a chance. She told me as much last night on the phone and this morning before classes started.
She is all about team Brent, as she likes to call it.
With a book in my lap and my back up against the belchers I have taken seat on, I wait across the gym for Brent to come out of the locker room.
Today I have one of my own books rather than a library book, trying to get caught up on my own personal reading list. Right now I happen to be on a fallen angels kick and since Sunday night I haven’t been able to put the book down.
It works as a good distraction while I wait today.
I lack only two more chapters until the end of the book and I want to finish it badly. I’d put so much effort into reading it last night in hopes of finishing it before school this morning saying “one more chapter,” and the next thing I knew it was two A.M. I was so tired I couldn’t hold my eyes open any longer and I ended up going to bed.
I probably look hideous today for my lack of sleep. I frown and reach up to run a hand through my hair. Hopeful it’s not as bad as I’m thinking.
If not for my excitement over the new day, I’m sure I would be feeling my exhaustion from the night a lot more.
I allow my eyes to meet the locker room door once more before I sigh and go back to my book. My eyes scan the lines of text, soaking it up word by word. It is indescribable how it feels allow myself to get wrapped up in whole wide world of fiction for a little while. As the end of the book nears, I feel saddened that I have to leave the two main characters behind until I get book two from the book store this week.
In fact, I may go after I run with Krista today.
Two pages from the end of the book I hear my name being called. I look up to grinning face with deep blue shining eyes. Brent is heading up the bleachers to me. I’m not sure if he’s just in a really good mood or generally happy to see me.
I smile back as he reaches me. “Hey.”
He sits next to me on the bleachers and his familiar smell of dial body wash and some heavenly smelling shampoo hits me in a wonderfully colliding mix of clean and citrus mint. I take a deep breath inward and sigh.
I think my mouth just watered a little bit.
I blush and clear my throat. “You seem in better spirits today. Not nearly as upset as you were the last time we talked.” Then I remember something. “Speaking of, did you kill your brother yet or you having second thoughts?”
He smiles, showing of a toothy grin and my heart thumps. He has a nice smile; very nice. I wonder why I didn’t notice it before. Has he always been this good looking? I always thought he was, but now, it’s different somehow.
He shakes his head. “Not yet. I’m still trying to decide on the best way to do it. Any suggestions?”
I laugh. “Maybe lock him up somewhere where he can’t hook up with anymore girls. He’ll put himself out of his own misery after a while.”
“Good one. I like the way your mind works. I’ll take it into consideration,” he says in voice laced full of amusement.
“Thank you. I’m pretty quick on my feet.”
