It took 5 months before our friendship became something else. I'd caught him staring way too many times and the way he started behaving around me changed too. I guess boys are just horrible liars. I was afraid to say anything about it in case I was wrong, so we never really got anywhere until that night.
We were at the Light Cliff again that night, admiring the stars. I could feel his gaze on me, but I didn't bother meeting it. "Chloe," he started suddenly. I turned to look into his eyes and all whatever words he had planned to say seemed to disappear. We stared into each others' eyes for awhile, then, he started to lean in. Part of me started to panic. Did I really want to do this? The other part of me was filled with excitement. You do want this, Chloe. His soft lips brushed against mine, sending a shiver through me. He kissed me and I kissed back. I do want this. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his around my waist. Time seemed to freeze and the minutes dragged by. Finally, Josh pulled away and looked at me. "I take it that you liked that," he teased cheekily. I only smiled.
We both grew up pretty quickly and the time we spent together started decreasing. I had to handle my own studies, plus Clara's. She'd changed after I ran away on the eve of dad's wedding. She said she wanted to live an honest life, it just wasn't right to keep doing bad deeds. Dad changed too. He called off the wedding and broke up with Annabelle, promising to be a better dad and to stop putting all the blame on me. He wanted to be responsible, said he didn't want us growing up too fast. I still had to do the chores and cooking, though, but life became better, more bearable. I still had Josh to fall back on, anyway. He was studying at the best collage in Pittsburgh and played for their hockey team. I never missed a single match of his. Sometimes Clara tagged along, sneaking into the locker rooms after games to hang around the team. Some things never change, I guess. I ended up entering Josh's collage as well, but we took different courses and were both so busy we barely had any time left for our relationship.
Even after we had graduated from university, our lives remained as busy as ever. We worked long hours and slept in on weekends. Sometimes, though rarely, I'd spend the night at the Hylands, wrapped in Josh's protective arms as we slept. At times, Clara would come as well, complaining of the loneliness she felt when being left alone with dad overnight. Those times were the best. The Hyland sisters, Clara and myself would gossip late into the night, our giggles and chatter never ceasing,
