"This is..."

"Insane?" I guessed.

"A little." The sound of Stevie's voice coming through the speaker on my phone was comforting even if his words weren't. "I left you alone for like... five minutes yesterday, and now you're dating someone you literally met last week?"

"I... I wouldn't call it dating?" I said scratching nervous nails lightly down my leg.

"Friend's with benefits?" Stevie said. "Though I guess this would be more like strangers with benefits, seeming as you've only met him three times."

"Four." I corrected.

Stevie carried on. "Four. Right. My bad." The sarcastic tone wasn't lost on me, but I actively chose to ignore it.

"And there's not exactly been any 'benefits' so much." I continued. "So..."

Stevie let out a deep sigh. "You know I'm not trying to judge you... I just... I know how much you loved Owen."

My heart clenched tightly.

Owen. Right.

"It all just seems a little..."

"Soon."

"Yeah that." He agreed. "I just wish I could see inside your head sometimes." He admitted.

"You don't need to see inside my head. You can just ask." I told him. "Anything you want to know... You're my best friend." I reminded him.

I heard the smile in his voice as he next spoke. "Yeah. You're right." He agreed. "So what are you thinking?"

"I think... I think I don't want to overthink this. I'm just going to see where this goes, and if it goes super terribly I'm gone again in a few weeks, back to university anyway."

"Ah the classic, literal running away from your problems."

I shrugged. "It works."

"You're right... So you've got to tell me something."

"What's that?"

"Is he cute?"

I grimaced in embarrassment. "Shut up."

"Is that a 'no'?"

"It's a 'we're no longer talking about this'."

"So it's a 'yes'."

I buried my head into the crook of my elbow, closing my eyes.

"He's... yeah. He's cute." I admitted.

Stevie whistled, and the sound came sharp enough through the phone speaker that I winced.

"So do you know what you're going to wear yet?"

"Uh... I wasn't going to put that much thought into it."

I wasn't lying. It wasn't a 'date' date. It was a get to know each other date... which yes might lead to kissing... But it was most like adding the friend's into friends with benefits.

"What about that red lacy underwear you got last time we were in town?" Stevie suggested.

"I'm not..." I hesitated. "Shut up."

Stevie laughed loudly and I pulled the phone away from my ear.

"I'm going to get ready so I'm hanging up on you now." I told him.

"Alright. B-"

I hit the red button before he could finish saying goodbye, and I flopped backwards on my bed, staring at the ceiling.
