the prologue of no place like home

this place is truly no place like home as dorthy gale tries to describe it
╚═══════════════╝

IT WAS A SEEMINGLY nice day in Kansas to the Gale family. Henry and Em were busy with the farm animals as Dorthy focused on her studies, little Toto was trying to catch a butterfly that if you looked close enough was taunting the small pup with its wide wings as it swooped down just out of his reach multiple times.

As Dorthy read on further into her book she shifted in her spot on the ground under their big oak tree, the sun shining in just the right places as she twirled one of her braids held together by ribbons. "Uncle Henry?" She called out sweetly, "What does the word
sesquipedalianism mean?" Her eyes trailed up to her father figure, his matching eyes looked to her as he used a tattered rag made from scraps of clothes Em had made Dorthy, to wipe away the sweat collecting on his forehead and neck.

"Well, I believe it means someone who uses big words." Dorthy furrowed her brows, "How ironic." She commented before returning to her book, giving a small absentminded pet to Toto.

A few more minutes passed by of the Gale family routine before someone had finally spoken up, "Oh, Dorthy could you please be a dear and bring out a thing of hay from the stalls." Em asked sweetly as she rounded up the chickens.

Dorthy nodded as she began putting her book and pencil down, making sure it wasn't in reach of Toto who liked to chew on the edges of her books, just in case. As she stood she dusted off any grass or loose hay that floated about the farm off her dress and made her way to the stalls which were a bit away from where she just was, which was probably why Em asked her to get it.

The young girl didn't complain though, it was a break from homework and an opportunity to stretch her legs. Even though she liked her work and found it interesting, sometimes it tended to fry her brain a bit.

With nimble fingers, she gave one of the horses a gentle pet and scratch behind the ear before picking up a bale of hay, which was heavier than it looked, and began the trek back to the farm. As she walked slowly, with a small struggle, she stared at the hay and wondered how beautiful the color was. Of course, she could no longer see color once she got back from her long trip to Oz nearly three months prior. It was like being deprived of oxygen, it frustrated her to no end and upset her to no longer have color in Kansas.

Everything was dull and unexciting, boring.

She also missed her friends she made in Oz, terribly. She had been stuck there for a month, but to everyone in Kansas, she had just been knocked out for a day and a half. Everyone in Oz was still unsure where the Wizard went.

Dorthy knew her time in Oz was real, no one could ever convince her otherwise. It would be impossible for her to imagine up new colors, and a month of memories is kind of hard to make up as well.

As she continued her trek she noticed the wind had uncharacteristically picked up drastically, her hair whipped from side to side, and it began to get harder and harder for her to stand without swaying from side to side. That's when she noticed it. The twister she had seen once before, three months prior, was headed towards her farm.

However, this time, the tornado was one of the brightest shades of red she had ever seen; save for her ruby slippers.

"Aunt Em! Uncle Henry!" As Dorthy called to her aunt and uncle the bale of hay flew from her tight grasp and slowly flew towards the tornado. Her eyes couldn't keep themselves off of the flaming red winds, it was like a trance she couldn't break free from.

"Dorthy!" Dorthy broke from her wide-eyed trance when Toto barked at her suddenly, her head whipped to the direction Em stood at, her hands were cupped around her mouth as she stood on their porch.

Aunt Em thought she'd fall out and die at the sight of the foreign color, only knowing that of black and white.

"Dorthy! Run!" Aunt Em screamed, holding her arms out for her niece as the twister suddenly picked up speed, heading right for Dorthy. Dorthy picked Toto up off the ground, the poor dog's frail body being blown by the wind.

Dorthy began sprinting across the field, Toto in one hand. "Dorthy!" Said girl looked up to see both her Uncle and her Aunt beckoning her to go faster, to escape the grasps of the tornado.

Dorthy panted, too much air filling her lungs, she nearly fell as she ran into the house, Henry and Em grabbing onto her shoulders so she didn't trip over her own feet. Toto swiftly jumped out of her arms, starting to bark wildly.

"Lock up the windows!" Henry shouted over the growing winds. Both Dorthy and Em did as told, Dorthy running to her room to close the French windows, but like the last time, the windows blew inwards, glass shattering and knocking poor Dorthy unconscious. Blood spewed from her newly formed wound above her left brow, the glass had punctured her skin quite deep. "I'll get you my pretty." An ominous voice spoke loudly, circling the house, that was picked up by the twister, on her broom.

Terrible plans were in store for sweet Dorthy Gale.
