-cassidy.
“surprise bitch, guess who got a job,” i say as i answer my phone. michael cheers and i laugh at his excitement, he was really one of the best friends anyone could ever ask for.
“i knew you’d get it cass, i knew you would,” michael says.
“thanks,” i smile.
“hey remember that luke guy we talked to at calum’s party this weekend? i hung out with him yesterday and it turn out he works at target too,”
“michael, you idiot, he told you that when we met him at the party, it’s where i met him,” i groan, mentally facepalming myself.
“oh, i guess i missed that part,”
“of course you did,”
“hey, don’t be mean,” after a little bit more small talk, michael and i agree to meet up at a coffee shop to celebrate the fact that i managed to get a job, and not just any job, but a job that involves interacting with people.
i grab my keys and drive to the coffee shop we planned to meet at, pulling into a parking space right as the clock hit 10. i order a latte and sit and wait, ten, fifteen, twenty minutes passing before i decide to call michael.
“where the fuck are you,” i growl into the phone right as michael walks into the shop. my mouth slightly drops open, for three reasons.
one, he happens to walk in the second i call him,
two, michael’s hair is no longer a vibrant shade of green, it’s purple now, and
three, luke aka target boy is standing right next to him.
“sorry i’m late, i had to go pick this punk up, hope you’re okay with him being here,” michael says as he slides into the booth in front of me. luke waves slightly and sits next to michael. today he was wearing a pierce the veil tee with ripped black jeans and vans, which made me like him a little more. “so luke, have you heard the news? miss i-hate-everyone-except-for-alex-gaskarth-and-michael-clifford-because-they’re-hot got a job at… drumroll please... target.” luke’s jaw drops, looking like a small child who had been told christmas came early.
“yay! i have a friend there now! it won’t be hell anymore!” he half yells. i laugh and finish my latte, michael snatching up my cup to get me a refill almost immediately after. luke watches him with a confused expression.
“where is he going?”
“he always gets me refills, basically the only reason i keep him around,” i joke. luke laughs but i can tell something’s a little off.
“why does he just do that? sorry, i’m so curious,” he rambles nervously. i shrug.
“he knows me really well. probably better than i do.” luke nods and michael comes back, three cookies and my latte refill in his hands.
“did i miss something?” michael asks, looking between me and luke. when he returned we had fallen into a heavy silence.
“no, no you didn’t. thanks for the refill by the way.” michael shrugs and grabs the cup from my hands, taking a sip. luke watches him with a hard expression.
“so, when do you start?” luke tears his eyes away from michael to meet mine, eagerly awaiting a response.
“tomorrow,”
“can i come visit you?”
“depends on what they assign me to do,” i mumble. my phone buzzes, signaling a call from my mother which i immediately decline.
“i’m pretty sure we needed more cashiers, so you’ll probably do that,” luke pipes in. “hy did you decline your mom’s call?”
“i don’t want to talk to her,” i shrug, declining another one. a minute later, the screen of my phone lights up and i have a voicemail from her. michael and luke had started talking about guitars and stuff, so thankfully they weren’t paying attention to me.
“cassidy, please come home, we have some very important things to discuss. come back as soon as you get this, i love-” i don’t finish the voicemail before shutting my phone off.
