Jace's POV
After about 2 minutes of anxiously watching the surrounding area we had everyone loaded up as kilo was trying to get into the drivers seat with me "Kilox No. you know you can't fit, No kilo. Stop." She whined before going and laying down in the back of the humvee. I spoke on the radio "Hold onto ya butts we're going off-road" before quickly accelerating, causing the humvee to lurch compressing the rear suspension before it really gained traction and shot off. There was some pockets of enemy fighters along the way towards our rally point in a forest clearing about 42km away, it's a hike especially when most of us are exhausted by the many hours worth of combat. I sighed as I glanced at my watch "4 hours, we fought for 4 hours. It's not even that special for gunfights so why do I feel so tired?" I heard diamondback next to me "Maybe it's because you weren't expecting the gunfight like you are when you're on mission" I thought about what he said, it makes sense. I nodded slowly "maybe you're right" we came to a halt at the top of the hill overlooking the base as I looked at yet another home in shambles just then I heard in my radio "Rainbow, Avenger 2-3 is on station ready for fire mission, send traffic" I sighed before speaking "Destroy the base, turn it to ash" I heard a chuckle "Enjoy the show, Rainbow" I slowly got out of the truck before leaning on the hood as I watched missiles, bombs and 30mm cannon rounds impacting the bases building. I sighed "Gear, ammo, computers, food for up to 7 years... and it's all gone" Just then one of the missiles hit the armory, some of the ammo must've survived our charges because the fireworks started after the missile struck it. I sighed as I climbed back into the truck "2-3, thanks for the assist. If there's any enemies running around the rubble feel free to prosecute" he replied "Roger, stay safe rainbow" I put the humvee in drive and we set off for the rendezvous point again I glanced at Harry in the backseat "Any reason you aren't coordinating anything?" He chuckled "You're doing a great job, you organized and enabled the extraction. You held and ordered the defense with stunning efficiency, you're my successor. I figure if I let you grow into six with your own style and trials and just gently guide you and teach you how to talk with politicians then you'll be right as rain" I nodded "I suppose"
Half an hour later
I pulled into the clearing before positioning my humvee around the edges as I told the rest of the vehicles to form a circle in the middle big enough to land a chinook and localize our wounded. After 10 minutes of securing the forest while the medics tended to wounded we all got a chance to relax when Kilo found nothing. I slowly walked over to where Lera was placed, coincidentally or on purpose I know not, next to my humvee, I plopped down with a tired sigh as I lifted Lera's head and placed it on my leg as I ran my fingers through her hair, kilo had just laid down resting her head on Lera's leg when Ana walked up "So good news, she'll pull through" I nodded as I glanced up "The bad news?" She sighed "she'll be in bed rest for 2-4 weeks" I nodded "Thank you for saving her Ana, I'd be lost without her" she smiled "Anytime, ill talk to you in a bit. I've got to try to save the wounded" I looked at Lera as I continued to run my fingers through her hair as we waited for the chinooks to come to extract everyone as I felt my eyelids getting heavier as I tried to stay awake eventually I slipped into sleep. When I woke to the sound of helicopter blades I felt Lera stir I looked down at her "morning beautiful, how're your feeling?" She groaned as she tried to sit up before I held her down "Hon' you have to stay down, you're gonna tear your stitches and bleed out." She nodded slowly "we're moving out, You missed a fireworks show" she looked at me with a cocked eyebrow "what?" I sighed "An A-10 destroyed the base after we secured our way out" she asked "Where's kilo? Did we lose her?" I smiled "Look down" she did and I saw a large smile threaten to split her face when kilo barked softly at her as Lera reached down and started petting her. I grew a small smirk as I looked at the sky My family is back together now. I saw Erik walking around as I called him over "Erik! Come here" he walked over "What can I do for you Jace?" I looked at him "Can you figure out when the last chinook is gonna arrive?" He nodded "Yeah, I can do that" I looked to my left at Harry "how's your new leg?" He looked at it before returning his eyes to me "brand new, a bit difficult to get used to but when I do it'll be great" I nodded "Thanks Erik, it means a lot and I'm glad your getting used to that" he walked away as I leaned back and looked at the clouds finally letting my guard down as Lera leaned into me. A minute later, Erik came over "25 minutes, they're landing 3 chinooks at a time" I nodded "How's your first taste of combat after 4 months?" He smiled "Knocked the rust off faster than a dog chasing a rabbit" I chuckled "Good, I'm glad you're back in action" he nodded still smiling "It's good to be back, I missed the adrenaline" I nodded "I've been bored in my office for the last 2 months with all this paperwork. Was kinda scared I'd never see combat again, I miss the thrill of war" he sat down next to me "We're getting old, we're starting to slow. We may miss it but we need to let the younger operators step up and take our place" I nodded slowly as Lera spoke "Apex stepped up and made calls when I got fucked up, she was ready... they're all ready. We just have to let them step forward" I sighed as the stress brought out my German "verdammter Schwachsinn, sie haben so viel zu reparieren! Sie sollten nicht so früh unsere Plätze einnehmen müssen, wir treten immer noch ... wir haben so viel zu lehren.(Fucking bullshit, they have so much to fix! They shouldn't have to take our places so early, we're still kicking... we have so much to teach them.)" Lera and Erik looked at me as they both said "What?" And "The fuck does any of that mean?" While kilo looked at me, clearly understanding me. I sighed "Nichts, mach dir keine Sorgen(Nothing, don't worry about it)" Lera pressed "No, what's bothering you" I looked at her "They've got so much to learn, how are they ready to take our place when we have yet to teach them most things" she nodded "Apex was making all the right calls, she was reacting and defending perfectly. The stress pushed her into the position and it got her doing her job. They're ready we just have to push them into that position" I nodded slowly as Erik spoke "They were doing good on the flanks as well, just as good or better than we were" I sighed "I know you're right, but I really don't want to leave the field" Lera nodded "Sometimes you have to let go of the past to bring in the future" I leaned my head against hers "I know" we sat there until the last chinook landed for the last 14 of us. I stood with Erik as I picked up Lera and walked towards the ramp, when we arrived I saw Nøkk and her mother, Erik, Mike, Max and Marius and 6 of the security force waiting at the ramp as Harry was speaking "- you're to move to the main building and wait for Jace and I to arrive, we'll talk to the commander and then bring you to the operator dorms" they nodded as he motioned them onto the chopper. I stood next to him, carrying Lera as the rest of the team climbed onto the chopper. I glanced at Harry "What do you think the future holds?" He looked out into the forest "I don't know, but I know it's looking up. They got Jackal, Mira, Valkyrie, Gridlock, Smoke and Goyo in a raid, around 1/4 of their leadership just got smoked" I smiled "Finally making some real progress after these months of nothing" he nodded as we climbed into the chinook and flew off to the base.
