Chapter 9
"Please hurry. Here, have another gold piece. You better deliver this letter in the next day, or you will be sorry," I said casually, and passed the letter to the anxious courier, who gave me a letter in return. He sprinted away into the forest, carrying orders for Alen, and I leaned against Riften's outer wall, opening the letter curiously.
I scanned the contents and snorted. It looked like I was going to have company after all. Elesis was heading to Riften with Dom, which was comforting. I didn't like being on my own - it was utterly dull. I'd spent two days pouring over a map of Skyrim, deciding the best places to strike. With a little help from my instincts, I decided that if I was in charge of these "Pirates" I'd position them on the roads between Markarth, Whiterun and Solitude.
I'd been staying in Honeyside, my family vacation house in Riften. It was nice, I guess, but nothing could compare to Hjerm, my other house in Windhelm.
Bored, I wandered through the streets of Riften, stopping to talk to a few citizens. I found myself in the Temple of Mara, staring vacantly at the wall from one of the pews. I felt someone sit beside me, and I didn't bother looking up.
"Are you lost, friend?" A kind voice asked me, and my eyes flickered over to the priest beside me. Marmal, I think his name was.
"No, just looking for Divine help," I murmured, fighting to keep the sarcasm out of my voice. I thought I heard a ghostly chuckle echo around the room, but no one else showed any sign of hearing this.
"The Divines always help those in need, especially my Lady Mara," He said in a preaching tone.
"So I've heard.
"You don't look like a believer - what brought you here, my son?" He asked seriously.
"I'm not sure," I replied truthfully, "Do you want me to leave?"
"No! No, of course not! I was just wondering if you needed some assistance," Marmal smiled kindly, and walking away.
I stayed there for a while before returning home.
Three days later, I was awoken at two in the morning by a brief knock on the door. Mumbling, I rolled of the bed and shuffle to the front, rubbing my eyes. As I opened it, a large furry animal bounded in, barking loudly.
"What time of day you call this?" I asked in an annoyed voice.
"Sorry," Elesis said sheepishly.
I shook my head as I opened the door wider, glad that I was wearing decent clothes.
Elesis came inside, and I slammed the door behind them.
"Dom, I'm liking the steel armor, suits you,"
"I picked that out for him," Elesis said gracefully.
"Thanks," I replied.
Another knocked had me wrenching the door open in annoyance.
"Yes?" I growled, in a bad mood from lack of sleep.
The courier looked at me with wide eyes, holding a letter.
"I've been looking-" He began.
"Yes, I know. You didn't have to look very far," I scowled and grabbed the letter out his unresisting hands.
