Blue. That is the first thing that I saw as I opened my eyes. I knew something was wrong the moment that I only saw blue. I closed my eyes hoping it would go away, but when I opened my eyes again it was still there. The blue. I couldn’t comprehend what was happening, why I only saw blue. I looked around and I saw nothing but blue. Different shades, yes, but blue all the same. I waited for my vision to clear and when I noticed the spots of white when I looked up, and as I looked around the world began to become clearer, I was floating on something brown and white, wood. I then came to realization to where I was… the sea.
I then started to freak out. Why was I at sea? Where was I? Where was my family? What happened? I looked around hoping to find the answer to my frantic mind’s questions. But there was nothing. Nothing but blue.
As I calmed after a few minutes, I began to think for some way to solve the problem. I began wondering about my life. My name was Maricella, that I remembered. Where were my parents? That I didn’t know. I knew who they were of course, they were my parents. But where they were, no, that I didn’t remember.
I looked out to the distance waiting to see something. But I didn't see anything, I didn't expect to but I hoped.* * *
I woke up. It was morning again, or what I thought was morning. I looked out to the sea hoping to find something, anything really. Whether it was a boat, a ship, a city, or some land, I would be happy. I would be happy to see anything but blue. But I never found anything.
I was hungry. Hungry and thirsty, it's been about four days since I remember eating anything. And that was before my boat sank. The day after waking up I remembered what had happened to me. How I was left at sea, but I never remembered where my family was. I remembered wanting to go sailing. Once at sea and sailing for a couple of hours I remember a storm hitting. I remember pickle, my sailboat, breaking under me from the current. Then everything going black.
What seemed like couple of hours after waking up I swam around trying to find more pieces of pickle, but never finding any. Finally, the sun setting I went back to the wood and went to sleep.
That was how my days at sea usually went. With me waking up, then swimming for a while looking for something to help me, always finding nothing. Going back to the wood and looking from there and still finding nothing. But I kept hoping that I would find something. And finally I did. I was looking around and in the distance I saw it! A little change of color, something other than the blue! With something to do other than to wonder and to think, I swam, swam to the speck of color.
While swimming the wind began to pick up, making the waves push me back. I stopped for awhile trying to get my bearings
It took some time to properly see what it was because of the harsh wind and dark sky, but after the unknown amount of time had past I saw what it was. A ship! It was beautiful! It had colors, colors other than blue. It was magnificent, with all its colors. It was white and had red, the flags on the ship were colorful too, with its pinks, purples, reds and yellows.
I swam closer hoping someone would see me, and save me. But nobody came. I swam closer to make sure someone could see me. But still no one came. After a while of waiting I began to scream for help, but my voice was hoarse. I cleared it and began again, screaming for help.
After what felt like hours somebody finally heard me! A little boy, about the age of seven, heard me asking and yelling for help. He went to the edge of the ship and saw me. He looked at me. After asking him to get some help, he left. Some time waiting I began to worry, as my arms began to tire, what if the little boy forgot? What if he got distracted? I wouldn’t be saved, I would be left at sea.
Looking up to begin yelling for help again, I saw him, the little boy! He had brought what looked to be his mother. His mother looked at me with what seemed to be worry and began yelling for help, All to save me! I began yelling too, as my arms began to tire. On the ship, one of the staff members came to see what the noise was. The boy’s mother saw him and pointed at me. The man looked at me and then left. When he came back, he was with two others and was holding what seemed to be a ring buoy.
He threw it at me and I went I went to it. The ship’s staff all got hold of the rope and pulled me up. They pulled and pulled until I got to the safety of the ship. When I got up onto the ship I was shivering and could barely walk, one of the staff members left to get one of the paramedics, as the others sat me down. When the paramedic came he gave me a warm towel to warm me up, and a checkup. The paramedic had said the I was severely dehydrated and that I was lucky to have found the ship. They gave me some food and water.Because of the emergency, me, we had to head back to the mainland. I would finally see my family. Hoping and hoping I would remember where my family is at, so I could go back home to them, in San Francisco. Finally, I started to gather glimpses of something, thoughts and pictures. It felt safe and loving. I then smelled something sweet, cookies. And then I finally figured out where my family was… Home.
