hey, it's me again. i'm sorry if i'm annoying you with these messages, but i just thought you should know that bailey's birthday is today. we're throwing a party and it'd be great if you could come.

i throw my phone on the couch and place my hands over my head. i knew he wouldn't answer my text. he hadn't answered any since the last time i saw him. part of me thought that something happened to ethan.

something bad.

but another part of me knows i'm just overreacting.

but am i really?

just as i'm about to walk out to the balcony, my phone rings and i quickly pick it up, my heart pounding through my chest.

i stare at the contact on the screen and tears blur my vision. i hear bailey skip into the room with a huge smile on her face.

"is that daddy?" she curiously asks and i frown as i shake my head slowly. i step out onto the balcony, accepting the call. "trinity?" i hear on the other line and i swallow the lump in my throat.

"dad?"

"hi, baby." i hear my moms voice call out in the background. a smile forms on my face and tears threaten to fall from my eyes. "i didn't expect you to answer my call." my dad stifles a laugh.

he was, strangely, very friendly, considering we haven't talked in six years and left off on a very bad note.

i cant say anything. i knew as soon as i opened my mouth, everything would just come flowing out at once and i'd be a wreck.

i wipe away my tears, sniffling. "oh no, what's wrong?" he inquires but i just shake my head. "i'm so sorry dad." my bottom lip quivers and i let out a loud sob.

i can hear him sigh over the phone before he says, "there's nothing to be sorry for, sweetheart."

"there's so much to be sorry for. i was such a horrible daught-" he cuts me off with a chuckle. "i promise you, you don't need to apologize to us." i rub my lips together and blink back the rest of my tears, trying my hardest to compose myself.

"why'd you call?" i finally can ask without feeling like i was going to break any second.

"just wanted to say hi and see how you're doing. i saw on instagram that it's baileys birthday today." i nod, even though he couldn't see it. "yeah she's turning 7." it's quickly grows awkward and i clear my throat, "well, i'll tell her you guys wished her a happy birthday but i need to go."

i hang up before they could say anything else. leaning my head against the glass door, i heave a sigh.

suddenly kayla walks outside with a birthday cake in her hands. "just put it in the fridge." i refuse to make eye contact to avoid the uncomfortable talk about my parents.

i find myself glancing down at my phone, waiting for a text from ethan to pop up. "mommy, look what nate got me!" bailey shows me a wii u box, giggling wildly. "oh how neat. you finally got the wii you've been eyeing at the store!" i exclaim.

nate removes his hand from my thigh and pokes baileys side. "guess what bails? there's two more things for you in my car."
