Chapter 1:
I Thought It Couldn't Get Any WorseIt's been three weeks since the virus had broken out and thousands already turned. In New York City almost all of it was unrecognizable. People only looked out for themselves and you'd be a fool if you thought that the infected were the problem. I, Darius Moore have been a survivor since I first heard of the outbreak.
I never trusted family and thought it'd be best if I went with friends or at least learned to take care of myself before anyone else. I had my main group of people and they were the only family I needed to get through this. There's Anthony, a fair skinned guy who was my brother, and took care of our gun rations. Next, Makayla, she's Anthony's girlfriend and in charge of our food and helped me plan out our day and was always the logic to my reasoning. Being into a militaristic lifestyle she had some of the best plans to help us with dangerous situations. Finally, Daevon, he's the fun part to our family that makes this outbreak seem like a dream, but when push comes to shove he always knew when to be serious in deadly situations.
We started out on Long Island, New York, building up our food supply as we planned to leave the state as there was nothing there for us anymore. The bigger communities were run with traitors and thieves so we decided to take refuge in Anthony's home until it was time to go. It wasn't the biggest place though, it was made out of a garage so there was only so much space for all of our needs, though we managed as we were the only ones who were there and shared almost everything that was necessary for our survival.
It was noon, March 12, and we decided that it was time to go. Anthony's grandparents had a truck that we had modified to hold all of our necessities. "It's time to go, make sure we have all of our food and weapons, anything else I couldn't care about", I said. " We're all set, who's driving?", said Anthony. "I'll drive.", said makayla. So we left it'd take about an hour just to get out to the city, but Daevon and I insisted that we'd check up on our other friends just incase they were alive to say goodbye. We found these two girls Marie and Cyndi by a fun down gas station which I knew they were just looking for scraps. They were close friends to our group, though as we said we're just saying goodbye. "Hey guys, it's good to see you" said Daevon. "I didn't think you guys would still be alive" said Marie. "Mia went in to go get some scraps were just keeping watch for walkers." Marie was very much a wild card, you'd never know what she'd do, but she's definitely someone you'd want on your side. "Mia's taking forever if she's not back in two minutes, I'm going in." said cyndi fiercely. "We'll take watch, you two go check on her." I said, and Cyndi and Marie went in. The store had only had the light of the sun shining light through since it was torn to shreds by the people of bigger communities taking things. They found Mia in the canned foods section looking for food that hadn't expired." We got worried about you, you were taking so long." said Cyndi in an annoyed tone. "Sorry it's not my fault all the food expired". Said Mia, there was a walker in the isle behind them and it grabbed cyndi from the mouth. Marie had shot the walker worried if cyndi was bitten, though she didn't see anything. Me, Anthony, makayla, and Daevon all came rushing in as soon as we heard shots.
"What are you guys doing! You know shooting attracts walkers miles away." I said, and I saw the fear in Cyndi's eyes as she said."I thought I was dead, so sorry if being too loud was not important to me." The walkers came quickly in large numbers to the gas station and there was only one exit. Marie and Anthony were quick to try and kill as many walkers as possible to make a clearing for us. Makayla and I were attempting to find other exits, a clear way of some kind. I asked cyndi if she found anything and noticed a small bite mark below her neck. "Cyndi, you—got bitten." I said, as she was quick to silence me and make sure the others wouldn't hear. "Don't worry about it we need to focus on getting out of here right now." The walkers had piled up at the front door that there was no way we were making it out that way. Makayla found a spot in the sealing though it was too high and there was no ladder. "We have to use the sealing." she said, so we used one another to get out. Anthony first made sure
Makayla got up then Daevon got him up. I said"guys Cyndi's bitten, she won't survive another day." Marie and Mia were in shock, they had no words to project the amount of sadness they were feeling. I lifted Daevon and Mia up and then Cyndi lifted me. "I'll be fine." She said Cyndi had been my friend since elementary school. I couldn't bear seeing her like this. "If I'm going out, it'll be in a blaze of glory." She then ran into the walker horde killing as many she could, but I couldn't see what happened to her.
Being on top of the building, there were so many walkers it was uncountable, but our only goal was to get to our cars and go. "We should blitz through straight to our car and go" said Daevon. "No, we need to distract them with a sound." I said, I saw a machine behind the station that was making a weird noise. I dropped down and started banging on it as loud as I could and the walkers came. I ran around them as the group jumped from the station running as fast as possible to the car. We all got in a started making our way back to the highway. We thought we were in the clear until we were surrounded by the community, Black Star.
The leader we hadn't known, but they sounded so recognizable to me. The man said "get out of your car and put your hands on your head." We complied as the group outnumbered us. They took everything out of our truck and the leader stepped forward. "It's been a long time, huh Darius." I thought it couldn't get any worse, it was my father.
