"See you later!" Hazel called as Sofia and Jackie went back to their separate homes. The time spent with them had temporarily kept her mind off of what she had done, but once she went back into her room, every single detail flooded back into her mind, as if the dam that had kept all those memories away just cracked in half.
It was 9:00 by the time Hazel got into bed. She tried to sleep, but her thoughts kept her awake, always nagging at her. Questions that could not be answered repeated themselves over and over again in her mind.
Suddenly, something changed in her bedroom. It was as if someone had appeared in her room, but when she looked around, no one was there.
"You know I'm here." A voice spoke, but it came from all around. Hazel's heart pounded in her chest, her breath quickening.
"Who are you?" She asked shakily, wondering if she really wanted to know.
"You know who I am, but can't you recognize me?" Suddenly, the voice sounded close to her face. She could feel its warm breath, but still couldn't see it.
"It's me, Hazel. The boyfriend you murdered." Hazel didn't have time to feel anything before she felt cold hands wrap around her neck. She could see the thing now, a faint outline of Jake.
"Jake," Hazel choked out, trying to break free, "why are you doing this?"
"Why do you think? You killed me for no reason, and now it's my turn," Jake tightened his grip on Hazel's throat, cutting off her breathing.
"Jake," Hazel gasped, trying to reason with him, "nobody can be trusted. I'm sorry."
"You couldn't even trust me? I thought I loved you, but now I realize that you can't be trusted either."
And just like that, he was gone.
