Ophelia kicked up gravel dust for fifteen minutes before she finally gave in and called her father.
It wasn't long before he pulled up next to her and she got into the car in tears and when he asked what was wrong, she had said nothing. Instead she had wiped her face and leaned her head on the window and they both stayed silent the whole ride home. She had walked to her room and slammed her door, turned on our gay queen and savior Hayley Kyoko and cried in the shower. She hadn't slept well and when she woke to the nine am sun streaming through her window, her eyes were puffy and her hair a mess. She heard a gentle knock on her door.
"I made eggs," her dad called tentatively.
She groaned a response. He slowly cracked open her door and she looked up at him.
"Here," he said and set two plates of eggs and toast down on her floor, briefly left the room, and then returned with a glass of orange juice and a mug of orange juice for his daughter.
She had a thing for mugs. He set them next to the plates and crossed his legs sitting down, patting the floor in front of him. Ophelia sighed and literally slide off her bed and slumped to the floor, her oversized t-shirt riding up her back. They ate in silence, living in the early morning sun beams until her father finally cleared his throat. "Wanna talk about it?"
She shook her head and took another bite of her eggs on toast.
"Can I make guesses? Yes or no questions?"
Ophelia nodded her head and he dusted his hands from the crumbs.
"Olivia made you cry."
Ophelia nodded yes and took a swig from her mug.
"Because she was faking liking you."
She shrugged.
"You were both under peer pressure."
Ophelia nodded again.
"She said some things she didn't mean because of said peer pressure," he concluded.
"That's not fair," she said.
"Ah, she speaks," he joked and took a bite of his food as his daughter glowered at him.
"Olivia was just using me. She literally shouted she brought me as a joke. Granted, she said it in a tense conversation but she still said it and it really hurt, Dad." Her voice broke a little but she cleared her throat. "Somebody asked if she liked me and she said no and that I was a joke."
"So you don't think she said that because she wasn't ready to publicize she's gay?" He pressed.
"No, I do think that."
"So she got scared for herself and said something she didn't mean?"
"Dad, I don't know! It was really horrible, okay? I don't care who said what to her or how she was feeling. She humiliated me to save her own skin."
He nodded at her phone and swallowed. "Has she tried to apologize?"
Ophelia clicked on her screen and saw six missed calls and five text messages from Olivia.
"Maybe, I haven't looked."Her dad raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should."
He finished off his plate and offered to take hers but she declined and continued to eat. "Hey," he said at the door. "I'm not excusing her actions, but I really liked her. See what she has to say."
Ophelia took the last couple bites of her eggs and opened the messages.
