"He's so cool!" A young boy cheered as he glued his eyes to the television set.
"You watching that All Might special again?" His young mother asked from the kitchen area, a big smile on her face.
But not as big as his. "Yeah! He never gets afraid! He always knows what to say and what to do."
The mother walked over and sat beside him on the ground, patting his head of green hair.
"I think you could be a great hero someday... We'll just have to see what your Quirk is." She said before kissing his forehead.
"Sir?"
Izuku Midoriya snapped out of his thoughts. "Hmm?" He asked.
He sat in a decaying room, inside a condemned building. The only thing in there were himself and six other people. Most of them were older than him but they all ranged to be young adults.
"We were just wondering about the new recruit?" One man, the oldest of the group mentioned. He had gray hair despite his youth.
"What about him?" Izuku asked.
"He... Well, he hasn't said anything. At all. We were wondering if you'd be the one to introduce him." He suggested.
Izuku thought for a moment, then stood up and nodded.
"I didn't mean to interrupt your thinking." He bowed.
"No no, it's fine." Izuku replied. "I wasn't thinking about anything anyway."
"You've.... You've been silent a lot lately, even today." His gray-haired partner said.
"It's been too long of a day to just blank out on." Someone else in the room spoke out. She had significant reptilian physical features including slits for pupils, hair spiked back like large quills, and scales that matched the pigmentation of normal tanned skin.
"Hachi, please." The gray-haired man silenced her.
"She's right." Izuku butted in. "I need to focus." He turned to the opening to the next room over.
"Is he in there?" The boy asked jerking his head in the direction of the room.
"Yeah." They nodded.
Izuku nodded a thanks before walking through the large doorway to the even darker, damper rotting room their newest recruit was standing in.
"Maindo?" He asked.
"Stay away from me..." The figure in the room hissed with his back turned to the green-haired boy.
Izuku respectfully kept the remaining distance between them. He waited for the figure to speak first.
"....Why did you bring me here? Why didn't you just kill me?" He asked.
Izuku lowered his head. "Everyone deserves a chance."
"A chance for what?!" He snapped and turned around.
Izuku didn't see a matured man, he saw a small boy, no older than he was, albeit definitely shorter. He had black hair with streaks of red in them as light reflected off at different angles from the sun outside poking through broken windows and holes.
"You could have all died for me. Why?" He asked.
"What I said: everyone deserves a chance." Izuku said.
"Do you even know why they had me locked up in the first place?" The boy asked, pointing his finger out.
"You don't know how to control your Quirk so they took you away." Izuku said.
"I murdered somebody! No.... I destroyed them!" He cried out.
"You murdered your step-father before he could get the chance to rape your sister. A selfless act that saved her and stopped an even worse crime from occurring." The green-haired young man explained.
"She's gone anyway..." The boy sighed. "She was sick. Nobody but me knows how to take care of her."
"And they took you away like you were responsible." Izuku said straight-faced. "You have every right to be free."
"So why bring me here?" The boy asked. "So you could use my powers?"
"So you can have a place to hide." Izuku answered. "Your Quirk is a wild card. Any organization, good or bad, could use you for their own purposes but I won't let that happen."
"...You can protect me, maybe. But not yourselves. I didn't mean to kill anyone. It just..."
"....Manifested." Izuku finished. "You are incredible, Maindo. Your Quirk could take you anywhere you want in life. You'd make a great hero."
"My family hated heroes..." Maindo said. "We're Yakuza."
"Maybe." Izuku said. "But you can be whatever you want."
"Can I?" Maindo asked.
Izuku stopped himself. He was sounding like a hypocrite. Could this boy really be a hero after all that has taken place? Not to mention the record his family must have with being Yakuza.
Then he had an idea. It was a long shot, but it followed his own personal desires for humanity.
"Can I?" Maindo asked again.
"Listen to me, Maindo." Izuku began. "Let us help you control your Quirk, then you will have the confidence to see for yourself what you can do."
"How are you going to help me?" The boy asked.
Izuku held out his hand gently and slowly.
Maindo flinched, but then reached out and grabbed his hand.
"I promise." Izuku said. "And on top of this, I promise to not make you do anything you do not want to do. Because that's not how self-control is born."
Maindo looked up at him and nodded. "Thanks."
Izuku nodded. "Come, join the others. Are you hungry?"
The boy nodded again and started to walk with Izuku out of the room.
"Expandee, I'm going out to get some food for the group." The green-haired boy said.
"Deku. I'm coming with you." The gray-haired man said.
"No. Just me. I can lay low and be less conspicuous by myself. No offense, of course." Izuku stammered a bit.
"Right. No offense taken, sir. Good luck." Expandee gave a smile.
Izuku looked at his humble group before him. His faithful partner, Expandee. His feisty follower, Hachi. His muscle, Crumble-Ton, who had sharp edges all over his body and metallic skin. His twin followers Sora and Miu who had a shared telepathic connection. And now Maindo, the mistreated and mysterious new boy.
"Be careful out there, boss. Don't talk to strangers." Hachi said with a smirk.
"He'll be fine." Crumble said.
"Chill. It's just a joke." Hachi frowned.
Izuku turned and walked out of the room and out of the old building.
