As the final bell rang people flooded out into the halls, relieved that the school day was finally over. I maneuvered through the halls and made it to my locker. I unlocked it and grabbed my backpack throwing my books carelessly in.I hadn't had a good day. On top of midterm prep in all of my classes, my boyfriend, James, was being extremely rude all day. I hadn't said anything. Normally he was very sweet and caring, but in the past week he had grown distant. I became slightly fearful of encounters with him, because I knew that in that time he would manage to put me down.
I walked quickly to get out of the school karma wasn't on my side and as I rounded a corner I walked smack into him. I smiled and he smiled back. I waited for the oncoming verbal assault and just as I had predicted,
"Careful there, we wouldn't want to mess up your hair anymore would we? You already managed to do that this morning."
I looked down as my heart sank. A surge of anger pulsed through me but I suppressed it and told myself that he must have had a bad day to.
James pushed passed me, but he didn't get far. My best friend Calum Hood had seen the entire encounter. Calum isn't exactly afraid of a fight and has been suspended more times than I can count. He had seen the entire encounter and had a look of death on his face. He started to jog after James retreating figure and grabbed him swiftly, turning him around.
James pushed his hand off and started yelling at Calum to back off. In the blink of an eye, Calum had pushed James back and slugged him in the face. I ran up and grabbed Calum's arm before he could land another blow on James. His bicep was stiff and I could feel the muscle loosen as he came out of his daze of adrenaline.
"Calum please no, you'll get suspended again."
I pleaded with him but his eyes still remained locked in a glare on James who was clutching his jaw looking very stunned. I had to suppress a smirk.
"I'm not just gonna sit here and let you treat him like that! That isn't how you fùcking treat any girl ever!"
Calum's raised voice turned the heads of people that had finally started to turn away. I grabbed Calum and pushed him back by his chest. I grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the school before any administrators could show up.
Once we were outside I stopped and let go of Calum.
"What the hèll Cal, you could've gotten in so much trouble. Again!"
I wasn't actually angry at him. In fact I was flattered that he stood up for me like that.
He didn't say anything, but he moved closer, hugged me and leaned on my a little. I could feel his muscles tensing and releasing underneath me. He was breathing unevenly but slowly calmed down. He let go of me.
"Christ Allie, you really are the only one that can calm me down. Even when I want to wreak havoc on the face of that bástard that's dating the girl I'm in love with."
