The mine was beautiful. Gems of all colours sparkled in the light that your Frosmoth radiated. She was guiding you through the foreign cave and protecting you from all of the wild Pokemon you encountered. Frosmoth was very attached to you, your mother had given her to you as a Snom many years ago. You grew up side by side and finally you were doing the Gym Challenge together too. After beating Nessa's Gym, you had wandered into the Galar mine to train your team for the third challenge, the Fire Gym Leader Kabu. Your whole team was bug type, which was going to make this step in your journey one of the hardest. Still, you kept moving, ready for any opponents that popped up along the way.

Your path was soon blocked by none other than one of your rivals. His usual smug grin made you scoff as your Frosmoth flapped it's wings proudly.
"Oh, it's you." he said, unimpressed. Your hands slipped down to rest on your belt, where your Pokeballs were held safely.
"Ready for another battle Bede? Or are you scared to be beaten so heavily again?" The blonde gritted his teeth and raised his wrist to look at his watch.
"I don't have time to battle against weak opponents." You laughed subtly, aiming to aggravate him more. Bede was a nightmare to deal with but you had learned that meeting his arrogance with your own arrogance would leave him flustered.
"Weak opponents who beat you twice?" Bede went to reply before dropping his raised fist and keeping his gaze on the ground. "Come on, I'll go easy on you!" He pulled out a Great Ball and scoffed. Bede secretly loved the competitive edge between the two of you and wouldn't back down so easily.
"My team can handle your full strength! I'm not falling for your mind games, Y/N!" You grabbed your first Pokeball and smiled, throwing it forwards.
"Be ready then, 'cause I always play to win!"

The battle was heating up! The personal competition between you was driving you both insane. You had sent out your Orbeetle first. He was one of your strongest Pokemon and took down both Bede's Gothita and Ponyta before being defeated by his Hatenna. You had sent out your Cutiefly next. Unluckily for you, one of her attacks missed and gave an opening for Hatenna to strike again, taking down another one of your Pokemon.
With balled fists, you sent out your Heracross to do some work and he did, finally defeating Hatenna.
Solosis was Bede's final Pokemon but one you didn't want to underestimate. Therefore you withdrew Heracross, who was starting to struggle, and released your Frosmoth into the battle. Bede's team was definitely stronger than last time you battled but you wouldn't let him win! Frosmoth sent out a powerful bug move, strong enough to knock Solosis out in one swift hit. Punching the air in success, you ran forwards to pet and congratulate your Frosmoth.

Bede's smug look cracked into a blush as he looked everywhere but your face.
"I- I let you win." he muttered, kicking the floor with one foot.
"You said that last time." His expression changed to one of annoyance very quickly as he met your gaze. Feeling bad for your playful comment, you sighed and pulled some medical sprays from your bag, walking towards your rival. "Here."
"No." You pushed the supplies into his chest, making him bring his hands up to catch them suddenly, lightly brushing your own. He shook his head and held them back out to you, "I don't want your help, go away!" Shaking your head, you walked away from your rival.
"You need my help, take it."
"Shut up!" He threw his arms about before quickly pocketing the items and turning away from you, whispering under his breath but loud enough for you to hear. "I hate you."
Bede stormed out of the mine without another word.

You were such an air head that Bede's hurtful words hadn't really hit you yet. Instead of carrying on through the mine like him though, you sat on a nearby rock for a few minutes and healed up your own Pokemon. Frosmoth floated next to you while you did so and was soon alerted to someone's presence. You looked up to see an older man in a red uniform looking down at you.
"Gym Leader Kabu?" You asked, surprised to see him out in the wild. He nodded, holding out a hand for you to shake. "It's an honour." you said, standing up.
"Y/N, right? Endorsed by your role model, if I remember rightly?" You nodded shyly and got sheepish all of a sudden. "I saw your battle, Bea would be very proud of the way you train your Pokemon." You felt your cheeks flush at his kind words. "That other challenger, Bede, is he troubled?" You laughed under your breath.
"Troubled? No. He's arrogant, he's ignorant, he's-" Kabu's expression went stern for a moment before you finished, "He's different." One of the man's eyebrows raised. You had a strong connection to Bede. You wanted him to do well but you'd like it if he didn't boast about it all the damn time.
"Maybe he's misunderstood." Kabu stated, "Maybe there's something underlying that you don't know. Maybe that's why he has such an abrasive front?"
"Maybe," you agreed. "I think he's better than me." You said, shocking even yourself that you'd admit that much. "I just happen to have a full team that counters his." Kabu smiled and turned to the cave's trail,
"Train hard, Y/N. I'll see you at the Gym when you're ready." As Kabu was walking away you studied his words.
