The best thing about Saint Lucia as a destination is probably its versatility. The southern parts of the island invite you to a relaxing and/or romantic stay, while the northern part feels more lively and exuberant, with nightlife, street parties and a wide range of other fast-paced activities. Saint Lucia has luxurious resorts and silver-white paradise beaches, but mountain biking, zip-lining, and exciting water sports are also available. As well as to discover the island's rich cultural heritage and fascinating natural life. Weather-wise, temperatures are at around 20°C all year round. June to November makes up the slightly rainy period while December to May is a more classic, paradisical high season.
The best thing about Saint Lucia as a destination is probably the island's versatility.
Historically, Saint Lucia has belonged to Britain and France in batches. From the 17th century to the 19th century, the poor island changed hands a like 14 times, until Britain finally emerged victoriously and kept Saint Lucia in its reign until 1979, when the country was declared independent. Today you see clear traces of both master nations but in different ways. Food-wise, and also linguistically, the French have had the greatest impact. Many villages and towns have French names and although the official language is English, kweyol, a French Creole dialect, is also talked to a large extent. British influences are evident in some parts of the community organization as well as on fun details such as mailboxes and the characteristic red phone booths.
Almost no matter what kind of holiday you're looking for, Saint Lucia will have something to offer to its visitors. Here I have gathered some of my favorites when it comes to accommodation, relaxation, nightlife, shopping, and food.
LUXURY ACCOMMODATION
Views, from one of the Jade Mountains infinity pools, over Saint Lucia's most famous landmarks: petit piton mountain peaks, left, and Gros Piton, right. At Saint Lucia, you will find accommodation at different levels and everything from smaller hostels to all-inclusive and luxurious boutique hotels. For those traveling with a slightly larger budget, however, there are also a couple of really exclusive options. And maybe you can treat yourself to at least one night or two at such a resort.
Jade Mountain, for example, with its beautiful (jade)green roofs, is located just above the slightly simpler sister complex Anse Chastanet, on the island's southwest coast, a bit north of the town of
Soufrière and overlooking petit piton and Gros piton. The resort has a fairly spectacular design, with individual bridges leading to the rooms, infinity pools, and rooms with just three walls. In order for nothing, not even a glass pane, to lie in the way of the view.
Another very lovely facility is the photogenic and relaxed luxurious Sugar Beach, which has a unique location, between the two iconic mountain peaks and where several of the major international fashion magazines are happy to head for their photoshoots. Here you can stay in your own, stylishly decorated, villa down by the water, swell around barefoot on the beach, stroll along the marked rainforest walk or enjoy high-quality treatments in the resort's harmonious spa, which is integrated directly into the enveloping jungle-like nature. Of course, each guest also has its private butler, who is on-site from arrival to departure.
