tobio kageyama tended to be an asshole- and he was aware of that.

no one knew why, nor did they care to ask- they just assumed, assumed, and assumed some more.

tobio did not like this.
in fact, tobio did not like anyone that wasn't his  grandfather, mother, or kitten, yui. and it stayed that way for a long time.

he played his volleyball, he had no friends, and he read too many books.
but, despite his short-tempered way of life, he wished he would change. he just didn't know how.
one day he asked his mother.
he was just ten years old, and he'd gotten in a fight with the boys at the park who were playing a volleyball match; he served the ball, they didn't pick it up, and he told them they sucked.
in tobio's defense, he would ask you: was he wrong?
and of course, as any snappy ten year old would, he said that to his mother.

in response to this, his mother said:

"tobio, not everything is a fight to be had. you are a good boy with a good heart, but you're not blessed with good talking skills- you get that from your mama," she joked.
"what i'm saying is this- take what you can get with a grain of salt. it does not always need to be you, all by yourself, all the time. it's possible to be wrong and it's possible you may learn something from someone you didn't think you could. don't live life holding yourself back..."

tobio spent every day repeating it to himself, because out of his mother's long rant, only one thing stuck to him:

"just enjoy the little things."

_____

tobio has always been a loner, an asshole, and a very talented boy.
what he doesn't know, though, is that those aren't bad things. not every little thing is bad.
and he will learn.
