Jahanara was a first child of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and her beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. She was known to her closest family simply as 'Janni'.
When she was born (2nd April, 1614), the red fort of Agra was decorated by beautiful flowers.

She and her family lived in huge tents, ate and drank from plates and goblets of gold, and wore the most expensive chadors and kameez.
Jahanara spent her days in the royal harem, the most protected and secluded places in the land.
