As soon as the lunch bell rang, I basically shoved everything into my bag, taking only my jacket and speed walked out the door. In my mind I uttered a small sorry to Sawada since he looked like he wanted to eat together. I knew I could count on Gokudera to accompany him though.
Weaving between the throng of bodies all rushing out to the cafeteria, I found most people were actively letting me through. Then, it dawned on me. Most of the time I wait until the crowd thins, so these guys hardly see me, which means they probably mistook me for Kyoya.
I stifled a giggle and kept going. Whatever works! I reached his classroom fairly quickly, 2A. Peeking in, I saw Kyoya was the only one left, speaking with the teacher. I only knew this second year teacher since his name was mentioned by Kyoya once. Amano Ryo? Yeah, I think that's it. He was new to the area having just graduated from university and so that would explain why he didn't look scared of Kyoya.
In my chest I felt relief. I don't think I tried to hide my concern for Kyoya's social life so it was refreshing to see him getting along with someone other than me. This meant that someone else saw past the harsh exterior. Amano's face changed. Oh, he saw me.
Kyoya turned around, following his gaze to me. His head moved slightly, signalling me to come over. My hands fell from the doorframe as I let go and made my way over. "Hey."
"Hey. Ryo, this is my baby brother, Kira."
"Ah, so you're the one I've heard so much about. Nice to meet you, I'm Amano Ryo, also this one's homeroom teacher, though he refuses to call me that."
Kyoya scoffed at him, a small smirk in the corner of his lips. They must be quite close. "I'll consider it if you become a real teacher."
Amano crossed his arms in a fake offended pout. "That's rude. I could give you detention if I wanted."
"I dare you."
I blinked at their exchange. Wait a minute. If Amano just started this job... no wait, the first time I heard his name wasn't this September, it was two years ago. Geez, my sleepy brain is really something. Where exactly did these two meet?
"Um, Kyoya–" My sentence got cut off as I let out a startled yelp at being pulled into his side, his right arm wrapped tightly around my shoulders.
"I met this dunce two years ago on a raid. He interfered so I challenged him."
I did a double take between them. "Were you guys..."
"Enemies?" Amano laughed. It rang out clear and light. "No, I was actually trying to help him. He stubbornly refused it and even threatened me if I got in the way, so I didn't!" He paused, seeming to consider his words, then add, "Get in the way, I mean. I did help!"
I looked to Kyoya for confirmation and the challenging but pleased look spoke volumes.
"He's alright at fighting."
"Awww, that means a lot to me. Still, I can't believe you kept such a cute little brother a secret from me all this time!"
My gaze instantly fell to the floor, my face heating up. Cute? Only my parents called me cute, and that wasn't often. I had no idea how to process this.
"Watch it, Ryo."
I felt his grip tighten around my bicep ever so gently in reassurance.
Amano held up his hands in mock surrender. "I would never. Come on, what do you take me for? I'm just being nice."
"Um, Amano-sensei–"
"Just call him Ryo, there's no need for any honourifics."
"Hey!"
