I sat on Hex’s back with Jake’s body draped across my lap. His wounds were already starting to heal over.

“Were we supposed to do anything about the poison?” I yelled over the rushing wind.

No. Our blood diffuses it just enough so that it wont bother us. I know he had two arrows in practically the same spot but Jake’s a tough cookie. He’ll pull through.

“Is that why he couldn’t move? Couldn’t do anything? The poison going through him?”

Yes. The fact that he took that second arrow for you actually amazed me. He moved faster than possible with that toxin running through him. I never even expected him to do that. Especially for a human. You must really have taken a part of his heart or something.

Upon reaching the city limits I saw two bright orange eyes staring out of bushes.

Perfect. Jake’s dad is going to help. You two are in good hands.

“I know.” Hex came to a halt and I slid off of his back then reached up to get Jake down.

“Iris,” Drake nodded to me. I nodded back. “Hector.” Nothing in Drake’s face showed if his emotions had changed or not at the sight of Jake laying, bloody, across Hex’s back.

Don’t listen to anything Alpha ever tells you. He lies to all humans about everything. I’m not an enemy of Jake’s. I just side with my pack. If you ever need help with anything please feel free to contact me.

    “How..”

Think.

After sliding Jake off of Hex’s back and onto Drakes I climbed onto Drakes back and held onto his fur and he ran through the streets. Once we were back in Jake’s house I walked behind Drake as he carried Jake up the stairs and into his room.

“Get a damp rag to clean him up please?” Drake instructed more than asked. Nodding I walked into Jake’s bathroom and reached under the sink to get a rag. Holding it under the faucet for a few seconds  I rung it out. When I walked back into the room I saw Jake was sitting on the edge of his bed, his head in his hands, shaking it as if he were saying ‘no’ to something.

“Iris, if you could step out of the room please. Jake and I need to talk.” Drake said taking the damp rag from my hands, my eyes never left Jake. I nodded once and turned to leave the room. Taking one last glance at Jake I exited the room and headed strait towards mine.

You can’t let her walk around like that Jake. I heard Drake say to Jake in my head.

I didn’t let her, she just walked out. I left her a note saying that we’d be back. No one knows where we live, everything is fine.

Everything is not fine, Jake! She could have given us away and we could all be dead! I want her out! She’s a danger to all of us!

Though guilt ran through my body I didn’t move from my spot in my doorway; only stared at the wall without seeing it.

Dad that isn’t fair! You know she didn’t do anything wrong! She did what I told her to do!

It doesn’t matter. I want her out.

But-

I want her out, Ambrotos Dysis!

A click sound signaled Jake’s door opening, I quickly closed my door and jogged to my bathroom and pretended to be busy brushing my hair when Jake knocked on the bedroom door.

“I know you heard all of that.”

I set the black brush down on the off-white countertop. “I know. What am I going to do?”
