'Always expect the unexpected'
This was the phrase that Izuku's mentor would use on almost any occasion. To Izuku it meant, "To be vigilant at all times".
And yes, he had for the most part been that way ever since his Spartan training with Shadow had started. But even Izuku couldn't have expected this.
No one could.
One For All. A quirk that had been in existence for atleast a century which can also be conveniently passed down to the next generation, was also a self evolving quirk in terms of strength.
A quirk that could give a quirkless individual the golden opportunity to become a powerful hero or a villian and it's current user had asked HIM to become his protégé.
The lounge room was submerged in comfortable silence. For All Might to give Izuku the time he needed to think and for Izuku to take in all of this. He kept his head down and his fists balled up pressing against his thighs, as he soaked in all of the information he was given.
On one hand he was astonished and deeply touched because his idol had presented him with this offer. And that someone had recognized him for his actions.
But on the other hand it was tough for him to just accept it. If this was the situation put forth to him 10 months ago, he would have jumped on that band wagon almost immediately.
Now though, it was diificult for him to choose. Why? Because now he has something to work with, which was not borrowed but unlocked. And someone who helped him acquire it. So if he gets a quirk, now of all times then he won't be able to use it.
His Dying Will Flames.
Which also meant that he was rejecting everything he went through for him to get into the hero course and the 10 months of physical and mental suffering to achieve HIS potential for his flames.
Sighing and after pondering for 15 whole minutes for an answer, he looked at All Might's face as they locked eyes with each other. Before making a decision he decided to ask him something that he's wanted to ask for a long time.
"All Might can I ask you something?" All Might nodded once and Izuku went on with his question, "D-do you think a quirkless person can become a-a hero?"
Almost immediately Izuku held his breath and closed his eyes. He knew it was a silly question, for one which he knew the answer to. A negative one but he had to ask anyway.
He wanted to know if he would have been able to impress All Might with his determination alone to get recognized for this opportunity. To know if his previous status as a quirkless person would have been enough for the moment he was in right now or if it would just be a bane to his existence.
"No Young Midoriya. I don't think a quirkless person can be a hero." His voice was solemn but his answer was bold and straight forward.
Surprised, Izuku opened his eyes and stared. Searching for any hints of All Might lying. But alas, he only found sadness. All Might may have kept a straight face but his heart was true to his emotions.
Izuku hated the fact that he could pick a read on these things, but he himself was averting his eyes from reality that hit him like a ton of bricks.
'In the end, Kacchan was right. You can't be a hero without a quirk.' Izuku thought as he oozed a gloomy aura around him. The thought of how much Bakugo and everyone around him was right irked him a lot.
But this also served as a type of closure for any and all doubts he had. He still remembered the first time he was shot by a Dying Will bullet and the first thought he had during that moment.
