Luke is a pathological liar.

A pathological liar is someone who lies frequently with no rational motive for doing so, also known as a compulsive liar. So for Luke, there are times that he is aware of his lying, and other times he believes that he is honestly telling the truth. Luke lies out of habit and bends the truth about everything, large or small. Telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable, so for the rare times Luke does tell the truth, it's easy to tell.

Ashton is Luke's best friend.

Ashton is aware of Luke's lying. He has been the one that has always stuck with him for most of his life. He tries to get Luke to realize what he's doing and it has caused some of his friends to leave Ashton after Luke tells them something bad (and not the truth) about him. He's just afraid that one day he'll grow weak of trying to help and just walk away from Luke's life for good.
