*Niall's Point Of View*
This girl.
The way her hair flips behind her as she moves her head to the beat, bracing her oversized headphones at the same time.
The way she loses herself in the music she's playing.
Don't get me wrong, I know DJs get into their shows. I know they're very elaborate performers within their genre.
But there's something about this one DJ.
Sure, she's gorgeous. Her long dark hair falls effortlessly over this amazing dress that hugs and accents every curve on her body. Her table hides the dress from around mid stomach down much to my disappointment. The lights catch her hair, her eyes, the accents on her dress and flicker, grasping out towards the crowd and snatching glances from every single person in the club.
The music slows, beats fade away as she tweaks a few bars and knobs on her table, adjusting and leaving the song stripped to its original magnificence as the lyrics come through the speakers strong and singular.
She strikes a pose in time with the chords of the song.
Her eyes scan the crowd, pausing briefly on each region of people cheering and dancing to her music.
She really is amazing. She plays to the crowd, and despite the fact they aren't exactly focused on her, she still gets such a response. Cheers and whoops echo throughout the club, actually discernible in the quieter, stripped piece of the song.
Her eyes find me.
I expect her to move on from me, but her eyes linger, observing me and taking in every bit.
Her eyes flicker, gathering each detail about me despite the distance between us, and then her eyes.
They meet mine, holding my eyes, captivating my stare.
Then the weirdest thing happens...
Her skin...her eyes...her hair.. everything on her transforms!
Life floods through her pigment, brightening the grey tinge of her skin. The colors in her eyes ebb and flow before me, alternating back and forth between grey and something...something else.
And her hair! The hues float away from her strands, leaving behind a deep, rich color unlike everything I've ever imagined!Instantly, the names pop in my mind, as if I have known them my whole life.
Tan. Green. Brown.
And then it hits me. She's my soul mate. The DJ, this amazing woman in front of me, is the love of my life!
"THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, NIALL?! GET YOUR ARSE OFF THIS COUCH AND OUT OF HERE!" My inner voice screams at me.
I can't argue with it. The second she breaks my gaze and looks away, I get up and make my exit. I walk past the bar. A man is engrossed in a conversation with some trampy looking girl, and his drink is left unattended. I snatch his glass of some strong whiskey and gulp it down in one motion. Leaving the glass on one of the high top tables on my way out, I push my way through the crowd of people at the entrance, all begging to be let in by some giant manning the door.
Finally out in the chilled air of the Dublin night, I dart my gaze from left to right, trying to figure out exactly where I want to go after this. I shake my head and turn towards the right and start down the sidewalk.
"How? How did this happen?"
About a block down the street, I turn left and dash across to the other side. I put my hands in my pockets. The air has a briskness to it despite being Summer.
I shake my head.
"Really? I can't handle this right now! The love of my life?? Seriously? How the hell can this have happened??"
I quicken my pace, fueled by the frustration boiling inside of me.
"I'm not at this point in my life! I can barely handle myself, much less a girl!!"
Block after block, I cross the streets, getting ever closer to the water. Before I know it, there's a break in the cityscape where the River Liffey cuts through Dublin. I turn, walking onto the Gratton Bridge.
In the middle of the arch, I plant my feet. I turn to face up river, and grab the large, concrete railing. A strong wind whips off of the water and hits my face, covering me with a light, cool mist, calming me slightly, bringing my head back to Earth.
I glance around me, realizing I'm seeing the city in a whole new light. The pavers on the bridge have a hint of a color similar to her skin tone. They're light brownish, darkened in the dim illumination from the lamp posts adorning each side of the bridge rails. The posts are a dull, mild green, weathered from the years and years of making its home above the river. Even the lamp light has a new glow to it. A slight hint of yellow glazes the light.
I let a deep breath escape from my lips, turning into somewhat of a groan. There's no way I have already found my soul mate...
I always thought I'd be the last one to find her, that when I'm finally ready--mentally, physically, and damn well emotionally--she'll come into my world. Never did I think that I'd find her when I'm 23, just finally getting my life, MY life, together, then head for the door the second our eyes meet.
I shake my head, gripping the cold, hard concrete. Gritting my teeth and clenching my gut, I let out a massive shout.
My voice echoes into the colorful darkness, bouncing off of the neighboring buildings and somehow finding its way back to me, reminding me of my angst over and over.
"I'll figure this out," I tell myself, and I turn towards the opposite side of the bridge, leaving her on the other side of the river.
