"What am I doing here?" You asked yourself as you wandered aimlessly through the dark streets of Atlanta. You knew where you were, but you didn't want to remember why you had come.

You had left for college in Wisconsin a month before the virus broke out, leaving your friends and family behind in Atlanta. Once you heard of the outbreak, you got in your car and drove back as fast as you could. You were halfway there when you hit a walker on the road and flipped your car. You woke up a good hour later in a ditch surrounded by the snarling monsters. You managed to get away with only a few bumps and bruises, but were forced to walk the rest of the way. Along the way, you had run into multiple groups of people trying to survive. They were quick to take you in, but your partnerships had never lasted very long. Most of them got bit in the first few days, and the others had either made a foolish decision that had gotten them killed or ended it themselves. This was the main reason you preferred to be alone. You felt as if you weren't strong enough to support anyone else, and sadly that was true. You were never able to save them. Try as you might, you always seemed to react too late.

As you walked further downtown, you felt a few drops of rain on your head. After about five minutes, rain was pouring down on you as you tried to find a place to hide until the sun was out again.

"I guess this will have to do..." You sighed before sitting down behind a fence between two buildings with awnings long enough to block the rain.

You pulled your thin hood over your already soaked hair and pulled your legs close to your chest as a way to regain some of the warmth you had lost. You clutched your stomach as it growled slightly. You had been searching for supplies for a few days now, but hadn't come across anything besides a stale loaf of bread, which you gratefully ate.You were never one to complain, so you were just happy with whatever you were able to get, which wasn't ever very much, seeing that the city had practically been picked clean of all resources.

"I wonder if tomorrow will be any better?" You thought to yourself. "Maybe I'll find that refugee camp I've heard about."

Your vague thoughts about all this were interrupted by a violent coughing fit erupting from your throat. Luckily, you weren't coughing up any blood yet, but you knew that you were probably close to doing so. Lack of food would often cause you to eat anything you could find, which would ultimately scratch your lungs. Laying your head against the wall you were leaning on, you sniffed slightly and felt violent chills race up your spine.

"Excuse me."

You flinched when you heard a voice near you. It sounded somewhat upset. Turning your head, you glanced up to see a shorter boy standing before you. He looked as if he was around your age. He had soaked brown locks that were already stuck to his forehead and pale cheeks dusted with a multitude of light-brown freckles. He wore loose clothes stuck to his thin body and a large brown backpack strapped tightly to his back. You ignored the fact that you could see his faint abs through his shirt so that you wouldn't begin to blush and kept your gaze locked with his icy-blue eyes.

"What are you doing out here?" He asked. "It's not safe to be out this close to dark...then again, when is it safe to be out here?"

"I could ask you the same thing." You muttered loudly enough for him to hear.

"Do you have any weapons on you?" He asked.

"No." You sighed. "I was robbed two days ago by a scrawny middle-aged man. He took my gun and remaining ammo, so I'm defenseless."
