Only one month until school ends and believe me, I'm counting down the days. I love nothing more than sitting outside sipping raspberry lemonade while the sun attempts to make my skin golden. My favorite part of it all is the birds. They say that if someone loses their sight they hear better and I completely agree. I hear the birds differently than anyone else. I can differentiate between male and female calls, different species and what types of calls there are. I could sit outside for hours just listening. Even with all that, I still find myself not able to hear the teacher as she drones on and on about science. Like woman does it look like i'm gonna be some fancy shmancy scientist?! No, didn't think so.
"Hey Frey! Frey. Freeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy. FREYA DALEYZA CARTER LOOK AT ME GIRL!" I turn and reach out trying to find Max's face. I unsuccessfully swing my hand around and accidentally hit the girl behind me in the face.
"Crap sorry Delia. Max! What do you want?" I whispered. Another bad thing about being blind is that you can't see if the teacher is paying attention to the student or not.
"You know summer is like a month away right? What the hell are we going to do this summer? Go to the beach and stare at hot guys, pick out fabulous colorful dresses?" she joked. This was what we did. We always acted as if our lives were completely normal and we could see everything around us. It annoys a lot of people in our school and our parents, but we do it anyway because it helps us get through the darkness of day. And night for that matter.
"Hells yeah! We'll go clubbing and stare at sunsets and shit!" With that we both burst out laughing with a groan from the kids around us.
"Seriously though! What are we going to do?" I asked. The past few summers we've gone to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Germany, and Disney World. "I honestly don't know how we'll top our other trips!"
"Ms. Carter. I do not believe what you two are socializing about has anything to do with the periodic table. Turn around and pay attention! You too Max." Mrs. Smith is strict so when I'm not in the mood for her crap I tend to get in trouble like now.
"With all due respect ma'am, I'm blind and can't see the periodic table, so I don't really see a point in listening to something I'm frankly not interested in. Maybe you could give me some reports on scientific breakthroughs with those robot laser eyes I'm waiting for. Maybe then and only then will the periodic table be of interest to me, but until that happens there's no point."
Good job Freya, another detention for the books. Mom's going to be thrilled. The rest of the day goes by slower than a snail on broken glass. I really wish we had art at school then I could sloppily paint on a board and get millions for it because I'm blind. Although what would I do with money anyway? I guess get robot eyes but that still hasn't happened yet! Like move your asses scientists. Finally the last bell rings and I nearly pull a muscle trying to get my back pack from the ground. I feel my way to the door and push to go outside.
"Freya! Over here darling." My Mom called. My Mom gets me to and from school because I don't feel comfortable with some random person walking me to my house. Like he could rob me or something! I walk towards her voice until I feel her tiny arm wrap around my waist. "How was your day at school?"
"Ugh totally lame. Science teacher is still a bitch. And the world is still pretty damn dark. Are you sure we don't live in a cave and it's like secret society? I'd totally be okay with that Mom!" I say. She chuckles as I hear the click of the car door opening.
"I promise we do not live in a secret society cave. I would've told you by now. And watch your language. Bitch is a term for a female dog." she said.
"Well in that case, I stand by my comment." She pushes my head down into the car than lightly smacks it.
"Lets just get you home so you can do your homework." A perk about being blind is a lot less homework because most homework has pictures on it. All I have is to read in Braille and write a paragraph in Braille. It kinda sucks but at this point in my life its pretty easy to do, its just a pain. Once, I finish my homework I lounge on my bed eating cold pizza from last night dinner listening to my favorite bands. Soon I feel my eyelids drooping, pulling me into a world I didn't know exsisted.
