Dougie walked out the front door.

Dougie walked out the front door because he wasn't needed anymore. Barter had not only won, but he'd never doubted he would win. Dougie was just a temporary obstacle. A bit of fun to challenge him. But he wasn't important anymore. Barter had Neila and he would forget Dougie's name by the time he got back to America. Then Barter would forget Dougie's face. Then he would forget the memory of Dougie all together.

Dougie walked out the front door. He walked out the front door because he had tried to play Barter's game. Barter made Dougie believe he was winning. He made Dougie believe that he had a chance to win in the first place. But he didn't. Dougie was just a game-piece used to get ahead and eventually get thrown away.

Dougie walked out the front door. But as he did, he walked slowly. Because in Dougie's film-loving heart, he couldn't believe this was the end. He didn't. He was just waiting for Neila to run outside after him, and together they would defeat Barter, or watch him come to his self-created, well-deserved demise, or at the very least, they would run as fast as they could in the other direction. But Dougie wasn't a movie character and Neila didn't come running after him.

Dougie walked out the front door.

Dougie walked out the front door for all of these reasons, but most importantly, Dougie walked out the front door because it's what Neila wanted him to do.

And then, a year had passed. Their injuries from that fateful night had healed and their scars had faded. Their smiles returned, and Dougie changed the sheets on the bed in his guest room.
