"I think it'll be good for us to have male figure in the house again."
"You're kidding right? Dad left 8 years ago and you think now is a good time to bring a 16 year-old boy into the house and he's going to count as a 'male figure'!?"
What the hell was she thinking? We barely know the kid!
"Emma, trust me on this. It'll be good for both of us. I could use the extra help around the house and you could use the company."
"You're insane... We know nothing about him!"
"Well, you'll get to know him."
I roll my eyes in frustration and grabbed my bag from the ground.
"I'll be in my room," I mumbled and started walking away.
"Oh, Emma dear, one last thing... Be nice to him..."
I simply nodded, "Of course, mother..."
I'm gonna make his life here a living hell...

That night at dinner, we sat through awkward silences and forced conversions. I'd actually never been happier to clear the table, it was that bad.
I started washing the dishes, since I didn't want to go through the awkwardness of sitting at that table any longer.
"Hey, need any help?" Asked a random voice.
I looked up from the sink and out of the window, "Grandpa..?"
"Um, no... I-I'm Luke..."
"For fucks sake, I was trying to be funny..." I groaned and turned to face the boy in the doorway.
He laughed a bit, "So, you don't need help then?"
"N-Actually, can you finish washing the dishes for me?" I asked with a slight smirk.
"I-uh-yeah, of course." Luke stuttered and tripped over his feet on the way to the sink.
"Calm down, little guy, they're just dishes..." I laughed and he rolled his eyes.
"I may be a few months younger than you but I'm an entire foot taller. So, who are you calling little, shrimp?" He snapped.
"Whoa, okay mister confidence... Just get the dishes done," I said rolling my eyes. "Oh, and never call me shrimp again...."
"Ei, Ei, Captain..." He mumbled rolling up his sleeves to finish what I had started.
