Basically after a pretty traumatic thing happens to the vessel 'they die or... almost?' the pale king is shocked and feels, even if he's a child murdering bastard, bad. So they all have a little hug fest where the vessel expresses just a little emotion. However things go back to normal pretty soon after that.
