CHAPTER I
"WELCOME HOME"Hayoung
After a 3 month deployment, I was finally back home. As we walked into the airport, our commanding officers told us to stand in a horizontal line. The deployment that I recently finished included all of the military departments.Once we were in the horizontal line, we saluted. Everyone in the airport cheered for us and thanked us for our service.
When our commanding officers released us, everyone ran to their families. Not me though. I stood there, alone, holding my black backpack. My family was on the other side of the country.
After I joined the Air Force, my time with family and friends was limited. As years passed, my friends slowly stopped being friends and my family just wasn't there anymore.
There was a difference between liking to be alone and being lonely.
I sound like an edgy teen, ew.
When I finally decided to move out of people's ways, I noticed a little girl by herself, looking for someone.
The girl looked liked she was about 3 or 4.
What was she doing without supervision!
The little girl came up to me and grabbed a hold of my thighs.
"Hi, miss! Have you seen my daddy?"
"Your daddy?" I questioned. I was questioning a lot of things. Who was this little girl and why does it look like someone copied Jimin's face and smacked it on to her?
"MAYA!" Jimin yelled with the biggest grin on his face.
Jimin is a daddy?
Jimin and I sorta have a past. Back in middle school, we were the best friends and when high school came, we decided to start dating. After we finished high school, things happened and just like me and the other people I cared about, Jimin and I slowly started to drift apart.
After a few years, I ran into him at our military base. He was still the same excited, innocent boy. It was very awkward meeting each other, years after what happened.
"Hayoung, I see you've met Maya." Jimin finally said.
"Maya?" I asked.
"My daughter." He answered softly.
"Also, since we're here, let's do introductions." He added on. "Maya, this is Hayoung, Hayoung, this is my 3-year old daughter, Maya."
"Nice to meet you, Hayoung!" She exclaimed.
"Nice to meet you too, Maya." I responded softly.
"Do you need a ride home?" He asked, smiling brightly.
It had been years since we saw first reunited at the military base but I was still uncomfortable around him. What was he trying to do?
"Uh, it's fine. I can get a taxi." I said.
"Come on, I insist." He said, still smiling. He grabbed my hand and started dragging me out of the airport. I harshly pulled my hand away and abruptly stopped.
"I can walk on my own, Jimin." I mumbled.
Now, we were walking in awkward silence. Jimin had different emotions on his face, Maya was secretly glaring at me for making her daddy feel that way and I was feeling guilty for the stupid move I just made.
Once we got to the car, Jimin strapped Maya in her car seat and sat in the driver's seat. I was the last one to get in the car. When I got in, I noticed someone in the passengers' seat. This wasn't a random stranger though.
Minji. She was one of my best friends from high school. But of course, it was the same story as the others. She had cut me out of her life.
"OH MY GOSH, HAYOUNG! She yelled excitedly. "I haven't seen you in ages!"
Jimin smiled softly and took her hand.
Damn, Jimin. First me, then Soojin and now Minji. That kinda hurt.
"How have you've been?" She asked as Jimin pulled out of the airport parking lot.
"Uh, y'know, just the usual military stuff. We just finished a deployment." I awkwardly said.
"Well, I'm glad you both made it home safe." She said and kissed the back of Jimin's hand.
There was a huge elephant in the room. At least for me. This was the second time Jimin has dated one of my best friends. Soojin and Minji both knew that Jimin and I were a thing.
But I won't blame it on them. I did some fucked up shit for him to go to the both of them.
After Jimin and I broke up, I guess Soojin was the rebound and after Soojin died, I guess Minji was there to comfort him.
By now, we were on a beach. Yes, I live in a hotel on the beach. I've been living here since high school, which is why Jimin didn't have to ask for directions.
"Wow! Hayoung, you live right in front of the water?" Minji asked as we rode into the parking lot of my hotel.
Minji has never been here in high school, which is why she was shocked.
"Y'know, I'm kinda jealous." She said jokingly. "You get this beautiful view of the ocean while I just live in the suburbs."
I gave her an awkward laugh before saying: "Thanks for the ride."
"No problem." Jimin responded.
I quickly got out of the car and shut the door. Jimin waited until I got into the apartment building before riding off.
Welp, that was a day full of surprises.
