5,4,3,2,1, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Kai, Evelyn, and Geena Thomas clinked glasses as they watched the ball drop in NYC on tv. This was their tradition, every year, no matter what was going on in their lives, the girls always spent New Year's Eve together. They were sitting on the couch in Evelyn's living room wearing silly hats and blowing noisemakers like kids. They had sipped champagne from over-sized glasses all night and were tipsy.

Geena waved a hand in the air to calm the merriment. " Ok ladies, her amber eyes sparkled ,what's your new year's resolution?" Geena, the youngest of the sisters and a full time college student, was staying with Evelyn while on winter break from Dubois University.

Kai groaned "Do we have to do this every year?" Holding a rubber-band between her teeth, she flipped her long silky hair over her shoulder, " ninety-nine percent of people don't even make it till the end of the month and they're already fuckin up, including us, remember last year?" She finished pulling her hair into a high bun and gave her sisters a pointed look. The girls had resolved to get in shape and had gotten gym memberships and a trainer. With Geena's hectic college schedule, Kai's demanding career, and Evelyn's responsibilities to her daughter and husband, they couldn't seem to make time for the gym and not one of them used their membership.

Geena rolled her eyes. " Eww, attitude", she pinched her nose like she smelled something foul, Kai we do this every year, why break tradition now?" "You two don't start with the arguing, ya'll been doin so good tonite, Evelyn piped in as she sipped her champagne, "and Geena's right, it is tradition." Evelyn, oldest and most level headed of the three, found herself constantly extinguishing the fires that sparked between Kai and Geena. Evelyn chuckled shaking her head as Geena stuck her tongue out at Kai who gave her the finger in return. " Stop it" she pointed at Kai laughing,"Okay, I'll start since you two can't get along." I've been thinking about what I want to accomplish this year, but its hard when so much of me was wrapped up in Marcus,"

Kai sucked her teeth at the mention of Evelyn's recent ex-husband, Marcus Patterson, he wasn't fond of her and the feeling was definitely mutual. "As cliché as it sounds, I need to find Evelyn again." she said quietly. Kai tucked her legs underneath her, "What exactly do you mean by "find Evelyn" she made quotations with her fingers. Evelyn took her time answering, her thoughts faraway, " I mean, Marcus is all I've ever known, ten years of my life revolved around him; his schedule, his clients, his meetings"--" His whores" Kai interjected sarcastically. Evelyn shrugged, " That too" she tilted her glass and drained the rest its contents, " The pathetic part is I don't even know where to start." She laughed humorlessly. Kai pursed her lips, "Fuck Marcus's dirty ass, I woulda pulled out my little black book a long time ago."

Evelyn shook her head, Kai, the middle sister was blunt, direct and to the point, you knew what was on her mind whether you wanted to or not. She didn't take shit from anybody, and had a red-hot temper."C'mon Kai, I've been divorced for less than a year, I can't be dating already, damn" Kai's brow wrinkled, "Says who, the divorce police?" Evelyn rubbed her temples, unprepared for a debate with Kai, there was no winning against her. "All I'm sayin is, the point of dating is to find a man, right, and since I'm not doing that again any time soon, there's no need to date, plus I can't have random men in and out of Jayda's life like that".

Kai rolled her eyes "Uh huh, blame it on my niece, you know yo ass just scared. The point of dating is to have fun and maybe meet an interesting person, it's not that deep all the time Ev" Geena cracked open another bottle of champagne. " Actually, Ev, that doesn't sound like a bad idea, I mean look at me, My focus is going to have to be on point this semester, I have 3 honors courses and my internship, I'm barely gonna have time for sleep let alone a social life, She fills a flute and watches the suds flow down the side before handing it to Evelyn, "and, if I have to go on another one of Kai's pathetic blind dates I'll find a high building and jump." Evelyn bursted out laughing, Champagne spraying from her mouth and nose,as she went into a coughing fit.
