Chapter 1:
Zoe Bagans Point of View:
(Summer 2012)
The light in the hallway flickered as I stepped over the threshold from the hallway into my dad’s room.
My dad’s door creaked open, sending chills up my spine. I cringe and hope my dad didn’t hear it. Luckily, as the door came to a stop, I could still hear my dad’s even breathing going in…and then out, and then in again, like steady clockwork. I waited for a few minutes until I finally opened up my mouth, “Dad?”
My dad didn’t wake up, so I inched a few feet closer to my dad’s side. “Dad.” This time it came out less like a question and more like I was pleading. That wasn’t really my intention.
After, what felt like forever, my dad’s eyes jolted open. They looked disoriented, at first and then they finally settled. My dad let out one last breathe and slowly turned over, “Zoe? What are you doing up?”
“I think there’s something in my bedroom.”
Zak slowly sat up, “You’re too old for this, you know…”
When I didn’t say anything, my dad continued, “What are you doing up anyway?”
I sighed, “Dad, please, can you just check for me?” I watched as he slowly got up from the bed and I followed him hesitantly back into my bedroom.
My dad turned around, “Well, are you coming or what?”
I nodded.
As, we walked back into my room, my dad turned on the light, and then stepped in completely. He made a complete circle, until he was looking at me again, “I don’t get it, what’s going on Zoe?”
When I didn’t reply, my dad just nodded, raked his fingers through his hair and said, “I think I’m going to go back to bed.”
As he stepped back out of the room, I quickly grabbed for my dad’s arm, “Dad…”
My dad just shook it off, “I have to be up in a couple of hours.” His voice sounded firm… almost angry.
My dad turned around, and I could see a little change, for the better I thought, “I’m sorry…Look, honey…why don’t you just try going back to bed?”
I nodded and quickly shut off my light. I just wish I could say what I wanted to say…
But, by the time I could muster up enough courage to say something, my dad had shut his door already and I knew it was too late.
Zak’s Point Of View:
I was downstairs cooking up some scrambled eggs for Zoe and myself, when Zoe came down, “Hey Zoe, did you fall back asleep last night?”
Zoe just shrugged and grabbed a box of cereal from the cupboard.
“Woah, where do you think you’re going there Zoe? I made us some actual food for breakfast.”
“I’m not very hungry, sorry dad.”
I watched as Zoe grabbed a bowl from one of the cupboards and pour a bowl of Reese’s Puffs. I sighed and finished cooking up the food I had cooked, “I guess it’s more for me than…”
Zoe just shrugged, “Dad?”
I looked over at her with my eyebrows raised.
She continued on, “I think I want to stay with my mom for a little bit…You know I’m going to be getting a half-sister or brother soon?”
I was a little frustrated, what the heck is she thinking… but I decide to hear her out. “Where are you going with this?”
“I just want to be there when my mom gives birth, is all, and besides that mom lives closer to school. I’d be able to walk, instead of you having to drive me… and you’re gone a lot for work, anyways.”
I feel my mouth drop a few centimeters. Oh god, hopefully she didn’t see that. “Are you telling me you want to live with your mom permanently?” Ever since Zoe’s mom had moved into the Las Vegas area, the more Zoe’s mom wanted to see Zoe. To tell anyone the truth, I would much rather keep Zoe here, but Zoe is old enough to make her own decisions. And ever since Zoe found out that she was getting a new brother or sister almost eight and a half months ago, Zoe has been asking to go over to her mom’s house more often.
I sat down with my own plate of food, and I started eating.
Zoe hadn’t replied…
“Well?” I prod.
Zoe just shrugged. As far as I can remember, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her like this before. Maybe, she’s bored here, or she doesn’t feel safe here alone while I’m out traveling. Who knows, but maybe I should pay more attention… I thought I have been paying enough attention though.
When I get finished with my food, I watch as Zoe finishes up eating her cereal, and then she gets up from her chair, dumps her bowl and spoon in the sink and heads up the stairs to her room… all without saying a word.
Teenagers… I sigh, get up and slowly start cleaning up the mess in the kitchen.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: To all of you who are reading Curious Things, I am still working on that... it's just that I wrote this story about Zoe Bagans a while ago, and I decided to upload it to see if it goes anywhere. This is not the end of the story, it just won't be updated again until after finals (so around Christmas time).
